Registry clean up and system optimization software?
Does anybody know of a good freeware registry clean-up or system optimization program? I don't mind a trial version, as long as it completely scans the computer and fixes ALL problems (the trials that scan for you but don't fix the problems REALLY tick me off). I wanted to speed up my Vista Home Premium PC. Thanks!

be careful of registry cleaners, they may remove registy keys that are needed (esp on vista)

If u want to still try one, and this is of ur own risk, try ccleaner.

As for optimisers i have no idea.

Hvae u tried diskcleaner and disk defragmentation? execelent, safe way to speed ur comp up. Also disable some start up items, to speed up ur cmop, and boot time.

Hope this helps,
Marv

Great, thanks! I'll set a system restore point before I try this.

My recommendation is to not use any registry cleaner/optimizer programs. I have seen far too many computers that were having problems because of these types of tools. If you don't understand exactly what the entry is for you are better leaving it there. The only use for these types of programs is in the hands of someone who can look at each "error" and knows whether it should be deleted or not. As far as optimizing the registry, it is a database. Defragging it may make Windows load milliseconds quicker. It won't improve the actual use of the registry by Windows.

Do not waste your time. These programs give you no increase in performance nor do they do anything helpful. I've seen them degrade and destroy the registry to a point that the computer is no longer usable.

That comes from personal experience as well, with a program called PC Tools Registry Mechanic.

jonmcc33, whoops, too late. But it seems OK, and might've done a little good actually. I've restarted the computer a few times just in case, but it's all good. Thanks for the concern though. I used Ccleaner.
