I have a problem which this sounds similar to. It usually happens with specific programs, but happens none the less. It involves the buttons on the taskbar (those that represent open windows) shifting to where the start icon should be, the start icon disappearing, the clock vanishes and the desktop goes black. If you click the blackness and per chance happen to click an icon, said icon appears and you can drag the icon around and it acts like an eraser of the highly odd blackness. Looks like a memory issue.

I'll try to post a screen shot in few hours.

A quick fix is to press ctrl+alt+del, start up task manager and close explorer.exe, then just restart explorer.exe as a new task. It'll save you from loosing your work in some instances, though.
