How do I organise the 'New' context menu by name?
Just as it sounds. I would like to 'Sort by name' the items in the 'New' document context menu, everytime another program adds more items to the menu it becomes increasingly more stupid looking.

Currently it is...

Folder
Shortcut
----------
Microsoft Office Access 2007 Database
Bitmap Image
Contact
Microsoft Office Word Document
Journal Document
Microsoft Office Powerpoint Presentation
Microsoft Office Publisher Document
WinRAR Archive
Text Document
Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet
WinRAR ZIP Archive
Briefcase

It wouldn't bother me half as much as it does if it wasn't for Office's ridiculously spaced apart items. Most things in Vista/XP can be organised with a 'Sort by name' context menu, but since this list is inside a context menu of it's own, you can't right click on it :P

Bump, someone must know something about this. If someone could even tell me the exact registry location I could order the items myself, otherwise I tend to avoid using the registry in Vista since it tends to be a little more eratic in this OS.

Are you seeing this "Above" the All Programs in the main pane of the Start menu?
If so you may be viewing the "Recent" programs. How are things listed when you select the "All Programs"?

Not sure I get the connection, but I use the classic start menu, I switched it to the newer start menu and the documents look ok. My prob is the menu when you right click on the desktop and then select 'New'. I want to order the items in that menu.

My error, I thought that you were working with the Start menu. I missed the "Context" menu statement.

This is the same ON all of my XP and 98 machines, they are NOT sorted by name, but appear to be sorted as they were added.

I thought that the sorting was alphabetical they the extension of the file what would be created if you selected that option. Your list somewhat bears that out.

This is based on where items are located in the registry and can't be easily sorted.

I'm very adept at altering the registry, HKCU, and all that, but I've noticed that the registry in vista is very 'random' in that several programs I have installed for Vista 64 have placed context menus in the wrong place or not at all. So rather than experiment as is my nature, I thought I would ask on here first.

@ Bob Cerelli

That looks to be correct from what I see, excellently spotted sir, but it still looks awkward to me :P I may learn to deal with it though if that is the case.

Since you can't alter the location where those items appear in the registry, you can't order the sorting of them.
