Unhappy VISTA home basic won't boot
Vista basic installed over XP-Pro reports NTLDR error ans doesn't boot-up

Upgrading from XP pro to Vista Home Basic requires a clean install:

Actually you aren't right though it is always more desirable to do a clean install. I did an install from XP pro to Vista Ultimate once.

Sorry, I wrote that incorrectly I did an upgrade from Xp pro to Home Premium and it surprised me but it works.
