vista post-install bsod
my system:

abit kn9 ultra
amd athlon 64 5600
2 gb ddr2 667 ram
radeon 3850
2x wd 164gb sata2 drives
1x wd 80gb sata1 drive

i'm trying to install on the 80 gig drive.

my system is currently not overclocked. i've tried installs as both upgrades and as clean installs with both the original vista and the version with sp1 rc. i've even created a custom disk with the motherboard drivers and radeon drivers slipstreamed into it. i've tried both x86 and x64.

each time i try, i either get a "memory management" bsod, ir an IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL bsod. i've run both the vista memory test and memtest 86 and my memory is fine. the bsod's happen after the installation.

i can boot into safe mode okay, but i always bsod after about a minute of being logged into normal mode.

i suspect the video drivers. i had vista installed on this system about 8 months ago with a single-core 3800 and a 7600gt and never had any issues. however, i can't seem to find a way around this issue.

windows xp runs flawless.

i'm considering ritual suicide.

any thoughts?

1.probably your driver was corrupted,
2.in safe mode start - run safe mode - msconfig - startup tab - startup list?

i don't understand what's confusing about that statement

......

yes, the latest version of the radeon drivers.

......

i agree that it could be a driver issue, but seriously, i've reinstalled at least a dozen times with a new download of the driver each time. it's not a corrupt driver problem.

......

uninstall the nvidia drivers? dude, these are new installs.

What are your ambient temperatures in bios right after the BSOD? Sounds like either Vid Card Driver/Faulty Hardware/Heat issue. I'm guessing heat Issue because the 3850's are have been known to have have bad eggs in the production basket with super high temps under idle. How's your airflow in your case?

airflow is fine. my temps are fine, too. in xp, my video card runs at about 32 idle, 43 under full load. my proc runs about 35 idle, 46 under full load.

hardware is fine. i'm thinking driver, but i haven't found a solution to the problem yet.

Since you can start in Safe Mode and Vista is installed -- let me have a look at the minidump files that should be created.

I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to %systemroot%\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder.%systemroot% is normally c:\windows. They are numbered by date. You can paste that address in address bar to get there.
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

>> Also, try a "clean boot" >> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Further, there is a system "health diagnostic" available through Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced.

See if that has any clues to offer.
