upgraded from XP to Vista home premium and now Windows Explorer shuts down and restarts over and over again and can't open any computer programs.

try turning firewall off

a main problem with vista is the windows defender that blocks everything.

I do NOT think this will help, as you most likely have a hardware issue. Have you install Vista drivers for ALL of your hardware?

What printers, scanners and other external devices do you have plugged in?

Did you do a clean install or a upgrade install of Vista on this XP machine?

I was going crazy with this same problem. Not sure if it'll apply to anyone else's problem of this type but here's what I did to fix it. I went into msconfig to find out what was in the startup list. I found 2 weird entries in there that were in system 32 that loaded on startup. So I removed these from the list and ran a HiJack This scan. And bingo those 2 entries happened to pop up as BHO's, there were 4 of them. After I removed those I did a windows defender scan just for the hell of it and it stated that everything was working fine. So I restarted and viola! I can now open folders and everything and explorer.exe doesn't shutdown or restart. So I'd say my problem was caused by spyware, but I figured I'd run it by here to see if it'll help anyone else out. Cheers.
