Vista cannot connect to error report website
Hi,

I'm on Vista Home Premium (Czech version) and i'm having a little weird problem about error reporting:

When a program crashes, the error reporting system asks me if I want to report the crash (this is how I configured it, I want to choose what is reported and what's not). if I choose to report it, it often comes with a solution that it has found on the Microsoft Error Reporting website and tells me that a new solution is available, but when I try to open that solution, it tells me that it cannot connect to the server. That's weird because

- my internet connection is OK (I checked and rechecked all the several times)

- my firewall (ZoneAlarm) is not causing that (I even tried to uninstall it and see if that solves the problem)

- MS server works fine because I can open a solution like http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/R...c-4408b007c66c (i found that link in the system information report generated by msinfo32.exe).

Googling didn't help as a few people are having the same problem but are clueless about how to solve it.

I really need help on this one...

What server address is the reporting tool going to?

And if you run eventvwr.msc and locate the error in the appropriate log -- systems or applications probably -- can you get an error report connection there?

These go to http://technet2.microsoft.com/window...008/en/library (followed by an error code id of some kind)

Thank you for the reply. I can find the list of errors in eventvwr.msc (these are all software errors), but where do I have to look for the error report connection? All I see is a description of the error that I can look at in both "simple" and XML.

The XML looks like that
Code:
- <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
- <System>
  <Provider Name="Application Error" />
  <EventID Qualifiers="0">1000</EventID>
  <Level>2</Level>
  <Task>100</Task>
  <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords>
  <TimeCreated SystemTime="2008-02-13T12:47:12.000Z" />
  <EventRecordID>53358</EventRecordID>
  <Channel>Application</Channel>
  <Computer>molumen</Computer>
  <Security />
  </System>
- <EventData>
  <Data>Explorer.exe</Data>
  <Data>6.0.6000.16549</Data>
  <Data>46d230c5</Data>
  <Data>unknown</Data>
  <Data>0.0.0.0</Data>
  <Data>00000000</Data>
  <Data>c0000005</Data>
  <Data>05dfb5ed</Data>
  <Data>da8</Data>
  <Data>01c86e3e891e7d87</Data>
  </EventData>
  </Event>
and the simple looks like
Code:
- System

  - Provider

   [ Name]  Application Error

  - EventID 1000

   [ Qualifiers]  0

   Level 2

   Task 100

   Keywords 0x80000000000000

  - TimeCreated

   [ SystemTime]  2008-02-13T12:47:12.000Z

   EventRecordID 53358

   Channel Application

   Computer molumen

   Security

- EventData

   Explorer.exe
   6.0.6000.16549
   46d230c5
   unknown
   0.0.0.0
   00000000
   c0000005
   05dfb5ed
   da8
   01c86e3e891e7d87
Could you please explain me where do I have to look to find the error report connection?

Thanks!

On the "General Page" of each error you will see a blue line referring to "Event Log Online Help".

Click that a couple of times in an a few seconds Internet Explorer should open up and take you either to a page with some hints on it -- or "sorry no help available" for the error.

Also, you can manually research errors by noting the Error's "EventID" number and its "Source"

And checking them out at these sites >>

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sup..._advanced.aspx

http://www.eventid.net/

The first is pretty much just the same as where you would get taken by the MS report.

thanks for the explanations!

Found the blue line (it's some sort of link, right?), when I click on it I get a window with infos like Product name, version, event ID, etc... When I click OK to send the info, instead of IE opening I get an error dialog box saying something like "no scripting engine is available for the .vbs extention" (it could be different in the english version of windows, mine's Czech...)

Looks like the problem is here somewhere or am I wrong?

I found that the .vbs files were associated with notepad++ (a small text/code editor). I rolled back the file association to were it was before (Windows) and now when I click on that link it goes to (for example):
Code:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp?ProdName=Microsoft%c2%ae+Windows%c2%ae+Operating+System&ProdVer=6.0.6000.16386&EvtID=1000&EvtSrc=Application+Error&LCID=1049
which is then automatically redirected to:
Code:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Windows%20Operating%20System&ProdVer=5.2&EvtID=1000&EvtSrc=Application%20Error&LCID=1049
