I don't really have an answer for your problem but I have an alternative solution to remote assistance.

What about using Vista's Remote Desktop instead of Remote Assistance?

I have used Vista's and XP's remote assistance without any issues, but, I have not used it using "Messenger Live".
Just send a email request and see if that works.

Also check the firewall on the one needing assistance.
Does this happen before or after the requester clicks OK on their machine?

Bob,
I don't think we have remote Desktop?

DaveA,
I may have to do the email method. I have used it in the past and has worked for me.
I will do the firewall check as well.

What about DaveA's question? When does the lockup occur? The steps, if I remember correctly, are ...

a. N asks for help
b. H accepts
c. N says OK for now
d. session is established; H can see N's desktop.

Sometimes I have suffered time outs because N doesn't notice that he has to click "OK" in step ( c ).

Also, what is the nature of the lockup? What does H and N each experience?

Dave A,
It happens after we click OK.
It is happening also with our video call also. After a few seconds being connected, it scrambles
then loses connection.

TerryNet,
The nature of the lock up is that both show partial screen elements. Like part of a menu bar, with black square patches on the screen, then maybe the status bar with sections blackened out.

OK, now tell use more about these machines. But we need the information on the Host machine as it is trying to all of the work, version of Vista and amount of memory and etc?
You are trying this across the local Network, right?

We are contacting each other on our home networks. Both are cable modem connections.
Both systems use Vista Home Premium.
Both have 958 mb RAM

Are you using a CAT5 or a wireless connection?

I have NOT tried it wireless. Can you plug in these machines to a CAT5 connection and see if it will work that way. This will tell us if it is a wireless problem?

Most Wireless modems have 4 CAT5 ports.

Yes, do you have the CAT5 ports on the back of the modem?
