That's actually good advice.

This really sounds like a hardware problem to me -- most likely with the power supply or possibly the motherboard.

Something drains in capacity when not fully on and does not get back up to capacity until you repeatedly try to start it at again at its normal level.

Hard to see how it can be "software".

Back in the "old" days I had a very similar problem with an "apple II". Back then I could solder into place a new capacitor and all was well with the power supply. No longer so simple.

Vista has numerous Resume problems that SP1 addresses. Read the changelog.

firemcd,

Are you getting error codes mentioned in that MS article or having a completely different problem.

If you read his description of the problem he must competely restart the system -- and do this multiple times.

You can't get to the F10 window or F8 from a standby mode -- you must restart completely.

Then this is more of a hardware related issue and should be moved: http://forums.techguy.org/19-hardware/

firemcd,

Other than when the computer is supposed to come out of system standby, do have any problems with the F8 or F10 keys?

This is definately not a hardware problem.
And I am not the only one who has this problem, I am just being vocal about it.
This problem is nonexistant with XP sp2 or sp3.
Others who have different systems using VISTA are having the same symptoms.
NOW.......
After sporatic responses to this thread I got home from a difficult arson fire and I am exhausted; tons of responses and questions awaited me. (This is good) When I wake up sunday morning, I will spew curses about the pain my 40 year old body is feeling, and address the new questions point by point, with attention to detail.
G'Nite and thanks for your time!

Exactly. That is why I kept posting all those other links with people having the same symptom with the solution not being due to hardware. Maybe one of them will relate to your specific configuration. Doesn't any else remember this being a software problem?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when this issue first occurs you force shutdown the system so that it is completely off -- then you restart it -- but that it takes multiple restarts to power up?

Or does the problem never occur from a completely cold start?

I have a Vista Business system -- and the only problem I have with standby is that it keeps resetting to the default "yes" on using a password when resuming from sleep. This too can happen after random periods of time.

If the problem never occurs from a completely cold start -- check your Power Options settings in the Control panel and make sure the hard drive is never configured to turn off.
