Solved: Can't open file/disc
When I put a disc in the tray It won't open. I try going to the start menu, clicking on computer and try to open it that way but no luck. Instead I get a windows explorer window that trys to open but hangs up. If I put in a movie or a disc for a printer for example, I get a window that offers me options to open or whatnot and it works fine. It seems with disc that I copy to cannot be opened. Is there some block or something?

Thanks.

Maybe it is just a problem with that particular disk. Have you tried it in another computer to make sure.

Thanks for the reply

Yes I have tried my other computer and they open fine.

It just seems to be the disc I burned that won't open on this particular computer.

I should also note my other computer is an XP OS and not vista.

Now I can open the disc on my laptop (XP) and save it to a memory stick and my desktop (vista) will open that. it just won't open a disc- it sees the disc, it tells me the date the disc was created. But thats where it stops.

Thanks again.

Can you provide some history for the disk that won't open on just that one computer?

For example, if it was a disk you copied, how was that done? On the same computer? Using what software?

It's not one particular disk, it's any blank disk that you can copy to. Just pics from my camera over the years that I saved. I did not use this computer. for the most part I used windows media to burn them. I can't recall any other software.

Also the computer in question is not the e-machine in my signature. It's a compac. Not sure where to find the particulars of it yet.

thanks

I'm sorry, I mean like blank disk you purchase. I have something on them.

I even open a program like windows paint to try and open them.

No luck.

What are the format specifications of the drive you are having a problem with ?

+R/W; -R/W or +/-RW ?

And does the format of the disk you are burning match the format of the drive?

Just for the heck of it -- if you are burning to R/W media -- try just a + or - R disk (write once -- not rewritable).

Did this problem occur out of the box for the Vista computer?

For what it's worth I had a similar problem with an Acer Business system. The Liteon +/- R/W drive that came with it would handle only R media not R/W -- it was just plain bad and you couldn't even burn any R/W media, let alone open it -- and I had to RMA the whole computer to Newegg -- which sent a new, and working one.

I think we may be getting close.

Not 100% sure where to find the specs. I clicked on properties for the drive and found it was a DVD drive. Would that keep it from reading CD-R? disks?

Thanks

If the drive came with the computer -- the computer model would lead us to it; also the drive model in the device manager.

But open up your burning software; somewhere in there there is a properties page which identifies the drive and its properties on the computer.

See attachment for an example

I used windows for burning but could not find the type of page you showed.
However....
I installed another driver from my old computer and it opened the files with no problem.

I guess the drive that came with the computer does not read that type of media.

thanks again.
