Which version of Vista to get?
Currently running Win2K Pro, and quite happy. I see the end of 2000-compatibility very near. Don't wanna spend the cash on something that's gonna be on it's way out soon (like XP), so I might as well get on board with the next big thing. All of my hardware is DX10 ready, so I wanna get Vista. What's the best version for someone who has always had the "Pro" version of everything.

Your best two options are:
Vista Home Premium
Vista Ultimate

I would say Vista Premium will satisfy most peoples needs.

Good think MS posts they will support XP up until 2014. Figure I'll have all new computers by then anyway.

Good idea on not paying for something that is 7 years old and not so secure.

The Pro version of Vista would be Business. IMO, the step up to Business is well worth the small price premium ($30 difference).

What do you need in Business that you cannot get in Premium? I know the difference, does the OP?

Yeah, Home Basic and Premium are both out. I think Business is the best route for me. Especially, seeing as how I can get an OE copy, for a lot less than a boxed version.

As long as you are not going to join a domain, use encryption, need group policy editor, or use multiple cpus [NOT dual core, multiple cpu] Then home premium should be fine. If you do intend to do any of those things, then go business.

I agree it is a sad day when win2k support for new hardware is gone. There are no win2k drivers for my video card [ati 3850]

There are no Win2k drivers for my 8600GT either. Fortunately, I just installed Vista Business. I'm getting Crysis tomorrow. I'm also downloading all of my Steam games again, so that I can see DX10 is all of it's supposed glory.

Oh, and transferring 19GB from a UDMA 100 drive, to a SATAII/300 drive, takes FOREVER.

It shouldn't take long at all unless those are 19GB of small files. Vista pre-SP1 takes a long time with a mass amount of small files. That was one of the huge improvements with SP1, it improved file transfer speed.
