SOLVED! Dell 8400 w/Vista - no sound
New hard drive; clean installation of Vista Business on my Dell 8400.

I cannot get sound to work. Tried Dell.com for drivers but I installed driver they suggest and it does not work.

There aren't any drivers for Vista from Dell for that system model number. That computer has the ADI 198x audio chipset. Sometimes drivers from other manufacturers work.

What shows in the Device Manager for your Audio Device? Is there a yellow exclamation next to it or does it show the drivers are installed.

I finally got it to work. Downloaded R14551.exe (from Dell) and it worked for 32 bit.

For 64 bit it said to use R145149.exe from Dell.

Thanks for the quick reply!
