HP printer not recognized in Vista
Trying with all my might not to reformat the expletive laptop, I now have another issue. My printer was printing fine(could not install by disc as it did not recognize vista) has been working fine for a year, and possibly for the same reason my antivirus stopped working- it just does not recognize it. It reinstalls fine. It sets it as the default printer fine. It gives no errors when I click print. When nothing prints and I look at the printer tray I find no jobs pending for my HP all-in-one 4100 series. I tried other ports and nada. I can print on my other pc's to the same printer. Should I just reformat ...again?
Thank you
Jerry

Is the printer connected directly to the laptop?
Is the connection wireless?
Is the printer hard wired to an XP machine?

Is the printer Vista compatable? If not there are work-arounds for some printers. Install the closest model to your model printer using Vistas native drivers.

One thing comes to mind however; did you install the usb drivers before connecting the usb to the computer? This is how most usb devices need to be installed.

Also, try turning off the UAC - uninstall the printer - reinstall.

HP all-in-one 4100

The following Officejet printers are currently supported in the Windows Vista operating system:

*HP Officejet 4100 and 4105 series printers

Dont get to excited yet

Big problem...1. %1 Is Not a Valid Win32 Application' error message displays on the computer when installing the product software on a computer running Windows Vista.

The buttons on the printer used to Import and view images. Well they do not work correctly on a printer that is connected to Windows Vista. computer.

Images CANNOT be imported or viewed using a network printer that is connected to a Windows Vista computer.

AND finally.....MSI. software Error 1603 Message Displayswill come up During Printer Driver Installation in Windows Vista .

And the beat goes on.....and the beat goes on.....

The New Vista Monster Some of us just do not like change! I'm one of them

About the Office jet printers........

4. MSI.Software Error 1603' Message Displays During Printer Driver Installation in Windows Vista - ...
When trying to install HP All-in-One software in Microsoft Windows Vista, an 'MSI.Software Error 1603'

message displays on the computer.

USB device not recognized--> there are many possible causes
1.Try updating the drivers for your USB chipsets.
2.Go to the device manager
3.Go to the USB section (at the bottom generally) and make a note of the names of the Universal Serial Bus controller, or Open Host Controller.
OR
You can Install a PCI USB card.
By the way did you download drivers from hp website?

If all else fails............Do System Restore!!! Gotta love it!

Download the Driver package from HP and "extract" "unzip" that package. All you need is the driver file and not all of the associated junk.

Change the propeties to make it run in XP compatibility mode or hold tight for another 2-3 three weeks until SP1 is available to the general public.

My computer recognizes it. When I installed it to begin with I had to use the work around as the 4140 disc said it was not compatable with my operating system. It has been working fine for about a year. it still says it is there and when I go to print it gives no errors, just does not print. the little printer shows up in the tray and when I click on it it shows no documents pending, like it already printed or like it never had a print ready. I dunno, I have a 2500 word draft to do for school this weekend so I will probably not reformat this weekend. For now the printer is hooked up to an old toshiba laptop so if I need to print anything I can just print from there for now.
I thank you all for your help.
I still think there is something wrong in my registry. I do not like that this laptop came with no recovery disc, just a d drive with everything on it. I miss the old sfc/ scannow and other features of xp. I think I already have service pack one just installed the other day...or if I am mistaken it may be for the word 2007... I just checked and I have 52 updates from Microsoft, 2 from word(that is where the service pack is from) and that silverlight thing and a capicom whatever that is?
hope this sheds any possible light on the subject. By the way the drivers were off the disc I have downloaded drivers from the hp site but they did not work right. the work around I used is just plug in the printer and when it asks for the driver I just put in the disc.
Funny story there I could not get my old printer to work with it so I gave it away, went to the local mega-low-mart and got the newest printer they had (this was the day after the release of Vista, when I had purchased my laptop) and asked them " is this vista compatable?" theyre genius response was "well it is new so it should work" I asked the girl and she didn't even know the meaning of backward compatable.
Well I took it home and same problem, so I used the work around and have been able to use the printer and not the other functions like the scanner, but who cared? All I needed was the printer, now that is kaput. On my old one ecerything is installed correctly and I can use it all.
anyhow thanks again for listening.

Jerry
