Solved: Vista SP1 Prerequisite Update KB937287 Failed. Error Code 800704C8.
Hi - I was looking through my update history and I noticed the above failure (dated 12/2/2008) but I cannot find any matching error codes from the details help links. The only information I can find is that this update is important as a prerequisite install prior to the upcoming SP1

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The only hits I got when I did a search on the number only, concerned failure to update Windows OneCare, which makes me wonder if you have that installed and it's causing a problem:

http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsO...34608&SiteID=2

The Moderator of that Forum responded with this link to troubleshoot updates:

http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsO...86736&SiteID=2

which may be of some help. In particular, see no5 in the above link for how to contact Microsoft regarding updates (it's free for those).

Could I suggest you backup all your data before doing all this? Although my updates went through just fine (that one installed 9th of the batch of 11), some others have experienced difficulties - see Trixie64's post in this thread:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vi...problem-4.html

just to be on the safe side. Let us know how you get on.

Good luck

Thank you (good grief) for your help and attached links. The only 'connection' I have with Windows OneCare is that I have the free beta safety scanner installed which is an Active X browser add-on. Curious though that my error code number should be the same as mentioned within the links you have provided. Thus far I have discovered that this update cannot be removed (whether successfully installed or not) so I can't try reinstalling it from KB937287. I am reluctant as of yet to roll back with System Restore to a date prior to 12/2/2008.
Still trying other things first - will let you know.

Here is a link for contacting Microsoft (remember it's free for any updates), although heaven knows how quickly that will happen considering their current crisis with SP1 etc.:

Could I suggest too, if you have not already done so, that you turn off the auto-install of updates until you get KB937287 installed? Since it's a prerequisite for further updates, you could be buying trouble if that's not in first.
