What is UG? I haven't had a problem with any game that I've played in Vista.

Unreal Gold; it's the first Unreal with an added mission pack, though I only use it for the online multiplayer stuff. I've seen a few posts about people having problems with UT3 on Vista (pre-SP1), so I was kind of hoping his Unreal versions running properly were a result of something in the service pack. I suppose it would be helpful to know if he was having any problems with them prior to the installation.

Ah, I see. I wish I still had the game to test out. I threw it away with a big purge of older stuff that I had.

I could just stuff all the files into a zipped folder and e-mail them to you. is there a PM function on this board so we don't dominate the thread any longer?

EDIT: to the above poster > I was just getting to that!

The question was whether SP1 resolves his issue in a certain game. This thread was started about reporting someone's results of installing a Service Pack. I don't see what the big deal is and if needed a moderator can intervene. Thanks!

I turn all settings up to max for ut2004 and ut. For ut3, I have to leave it set at default because there is a problem with the ati driver. The game will fail to launch if detail, texture, etc are turned up. Supposedly ati is working on the problem; I hope it gets fixed soon.

Yeah, right -- I played that for about a year until I got broadband.

The bots are great shooters but lousy on tactics and complex maneuvers.

Play against some real pros, buddy, and you will learn what it's all about.

I probably spend more time playing ONS/Torlan than I do here

It's a cult map played by folks who play little else -- the web equivalent of a pickup game of basketball in the park -- but with guns and vehicles

Teamwork is everything!

Kill em' all!!

Were you able to run everything at max settings without any problems prior to installing SP1?

I'm resistant to believe the lagging is caused by my hardware when I can run the game with minimal lag on another (XP) rig that's over 4 years old (P4, Geforce mx440, 512 ram).

How are you measuring "lag" -- FPS or "latency"?

And what is the hardware on your Vista rig?

You will need more, equivalently, than on XP for sure.

My player moves extremely slow through the maps for the majority of the time (sometimes, very rarely, he will move at the normal speed), and at random [brief] moments will run like I have a speed cheat or something. I guess that's a FPS issue?

I have a Pentium core2 2.2ghz, Geforce 8400m and 3gb ram on the Vista laptop.

I would expect that system to do decently. However keep in mind that laptops not explictly designed for gaming may overheat and cause performance degradation as well.

Have a look here and monitor your FPS >>

http://unreal.gamegate2k.com/ut2004/...nt2004/console

FPS, in my experience, and I play on a XP Dimension 8200 with 1 gig of ram and a 9600 XT 256mb card, varies with the player load on ther server. I'm lucky to stay above 20 fps when 20 or more players are on the server. A really high end rig will max out at about 90 fps -- and believe me it makes a difference when you are competing against good players.

But "latency" is something else -- that's the "ping" time to your server.

Problems with either can cause you to "lag". Very often it is at the server end -- and nothing you can do about it. But on the better, more active servers -- you should not have a problem with "latency" unless you are playing on some European server.

Here's what I suggest you do >> join this forum:

and start a thread in the Tech/Buzz support forum there.

This is a forum for Ut2k4 and UT3 junkies and if anyone can give you answers -- someone there should be able to.

Yes in ut2004 and ut. In ut3, there is a problem with the video driver and or game. If you use an ati 3xxx series card and turn up the detail, textures, etc, the game will fail to launch.

Since sp1, I have not had a failure to launch yet however i am not going to say it is fixed yet. I will wait a few more days and see.

I appreciate all the help so far. I do play on a Euro server from time to time, but my ping never really gets out of control and that still doesn't explain why it would happen consistently in Vista and not in XP.

And yeah, I know all about good players: there are only ever 2 or 3 well-populated servers, and they're clan servers full of people that play religiously; it's basically impossible unless the game is running at the proper speed (which explains my frustration). Anyway, I'll move over to the other forum so someone can get this back on topic.
