Dual-Core, Two Physical CPUs, on Vista
The computer I'm using now came with Vista Home Basic just shortly after it was released, but various things about it drove me crazy (particularly constant freezes and incompatibility with my software), so I formatted my hd and installed XP, but now that SP1 is coming out (and I'm sure many other updates have improved Vista) I think I might try it again. BUT, I have a question concerning the Dual-Core, Two Physical CPUs thing. It kind of confuses me, and I'm having a hard time following the stuff I'm finding online.

The CPU I'm using is an AMD Turion64 x2 (the rest of my specs are in my sig). I know that some versions of Vista support two physical CPUs and some don't, but this is dual-core, not two physical CPUs, so I don't know if that's an issue. So, my question is this-- Should I upgrade my Vista to Business to get the most out of my CPU or would Home Basic work just as well?

Were you happy with the performance part of Vista on a 1 gig ram, 1.6 Turion laptop? That would decide me right there if you were not, to stick with XP.

If you were satisfied, a reserved yes as far as going to Business version (or any other than Basic). I don't know if it will get more out of the CPU but Basic is so short on features it shouldn't even be a retail product, but it may have been on your system because it will slow even more to put any other version of Vista on it.

Hmm, ok, thanks, I'll take that into consideration. I might just stick with XP, then.

the problem with vista when you had it installed was not vista. it was your ram. i would suggest at least 2 to 3 gigs of ram for vista. then it will run smooth.
the processor will be fine. as far as software compatibility i am not sure if they would have updated the compatibility tool microsoft has for sp1 or not.
i would say get one to two more gigs of ram and go for it, the experience will be much better.

I agree I would consider 2 gb ram, but bare in mind SP1 for Vista is showing big boosts in network and internet speed. I have been on it on a bench machine for about 45 days and I noticed that boost the minute I installed SP1 so your thinking to want to upgrade actually is right on with advent of SP1.
