Go to accessories and RIGHT click on command prompt. Choose "run as admin". In the command prompt window type in......

net localhost Administrator /add Local Service

Hit enter.

Then at the next prompt, type in ......

net localhost Administrator

You should see a line that says "NT AuthorityLocal Service". That confirms that it was added. Exit it out of there and reboot.
That was certainly an easier way to get there. Unfortunately, I'm still getting this:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>net localhost Administrator/add Local Service
The syntax of this command is:

NET
[ ACCOUNTS | COMPUTER | CONFIG | CONTINUE | FILE | GROUP | HELP |
HELPMSG | LOCALGROUP | PAUSE | PRINT | SESSION | SHARE | START |
STATISTICS | STOP | TIME | USE | USER | VIEW ]

C:\Windows\system32>net localhost Administrator
The syntax of this command is:

NET
[ ACCOUNTS | COMPUTER | CONFIG | CONTINUE | FILE | GROUP | HELP |
HELPMSG | LOCALGROUP | PAUSE | PRINT | SESSION | SHARE | START |
STATISTICS | STOP | TIME | USE | USER | VIEW ]

Thanks TerryNet for the new C&P Computer skill.

mtbird, just looking at the above output, "localhost" does not seem to be an option. Should it be "localgroup" or something else?

Don't we just love computers

I don't know why the workaround will not go for you. I have fixed this on 4 different computers in the last 2 weeks.

Since this has been related to installing some messenger programs (among others), if you had installed something right before this happened, I would try uninstalling. You could also try a system restore, if you have a restore point that was created beforehand.

OK, pretty sure that link says that you just made a typo type thingy. Beginning with post #14 you meant localgroup, not localhost. Localhost may come later in the process. Double check me on this, but the command you want executed now is

net localgroup Administrator /add Local Service

Deep Joy Here!!!! My beautiful little world icon is back, the red x is gone and I can access my network and sharing page without a problem. Hallelujah!!!

I followed the link and did the second instructions that suggested using host instead of group.

If you type in the first command and see a window like the one below with the statement 'The syntax of this command is,' this means that you need to change the word 'group' to 'host.'

The new command you should enter will read:
net localhost Administrator /add Local Service

Then run the command:
net localhost Administrator

and make sure that you see the 'NT AuthorityLocal Service' line appear. Then reboot your computer.

To fix the WMI Control error, follow these steps:

Open up a command prompt as described above and type in the following command:
net localgroup Administrators /add Service

Then run the command:
net localgroup Administrator

and make sure that you see the 'NT AuthorityService' line appear. Then reboot your computer.
This command works the same as above. If you get the syntax error screen, just change the word 'group' to 'host' as described above. You should now go back to the WMI Control window as described above and check to see that the lines that said 'access denied' are gone. The window should now display some information about your computer's system and not have any kind of error message in it.

I'm not sure what you did different, but we were going for localhost instead of group

No matter. You are back up and running and that is what counts

BTW Shirley......can I ask you......had you installed any programs right before this happened ? It's for my own reference, since this seems to be a big problem and M$ has yet to address it.

In answer to your question,

I'm not just sure the date it happened to be perfectly honest, but I did install "google talk" awhile ago at the request of a friend. Once again, it's a messaging program. I've since uninstalled.

Funny, the Dell Tech acted like he'd never heard of the problem before. I tried to tell him that there were several forums where people were having this problem. He told me it was best not to go into the forums because they're usually wrong.

Mtbird.
If you are still curious about this fault. There was a windows optional update for it, looking back through my history, I think it was kb941649.
Not sure what the difference would be for the "group" and "host" problem.

I think, if the original poster had then rebooted and tried it all again, the "group" option would have been available. But it was sorted so well done.

Hi all

I had more or less the same problem.
The setup Vista Business client pc, Win 2003 Domain, user logged onto the domain with admin rights.
I noticed the red X on the network icon but the Emails and Internet still worked. All my troubles started when I tried to setup a VPN to the domain and got the access denied on the network connections in the control panel. I did try the above fixes (Save Mode, CMD promt), but with no luck. But when I logged on to pc with the domain Admin account all was fine.
My workaround for the problem was.

1. Backup the user's emails (export to pst), doc's, pics and all other files needed in the user profile.
2. Log on as Domain Administrator
3. Delete the user's profile and "Account Unknown" (System Properties > Advanced > User Profiles > Settings)
4. Reboot
5. Log on with user credentials to create a new account
6. Restore the user files from the backup

I don’t know if this was domain specific. If anyone has a better solution please let me know.
