how to access my school's server - in vista?
ok, so at my college i go to, most computers used are macs. a lot of the times i will need to access my teacher's "dropbox" (a folder where u turn your homework files into), by going to Window(i think)>Go. remember, this is on a mac. Whenever I click "Go" , a screen pops up asking for the server name, so I type in "aiafs00". It then asks for a username and password, so I type that in. finally a window pops up asking which part of the server I want to access, so I click dropboxes, and the Dropboxes icon pops up on the desktop. My question is, how do I do this on my Vista laptop when I am at school. Im pretty sure I can't do it from home because I think I have to be connected to the schools internet/network to access this server. Anyone know how to do it on vista? thanks.

Don't be afraid to ask the college how to do it, they pay people to do just that, and you pay them to go there. So you're paying their salary, it's time they get with the program and teach you something. They likely have an ActiveX or Java function to access it from home, ask them how. You're there to learn, they're there to teach.

Windows and Mac seem to take a ridiculously long time to see each other. If I open network, I usually don't see the mac until after about an hour. Even after I see the mac, the mac usually takes quite a bit longer to see the 2003 server and other windows machines in the network. Once I can see the mac, it shows up as the machine name, then clicking on that gets me the folder/share list. I haven't used dropboxes, so I can't tell you how that would show up in network.

They would need to setup the your teachers PC as a Samba server for you to access it from Windows. OS X and Windows do have the capabilites to share files, but I doubt they have it setup on their Macs by default.
