Audio volume very low
I am brand new to Vista, so I am still trying to figure it out.

The audio volume on this box is very low.

I have installed the latest audio device drivers from the manufacturer.

* Everything under Control Panel - Sound - Speakers - Levels is maxed.
* Everything under the Volume Mixer is maxed.
* Volume control on speakers and headphones is maxed.

Is this really all I can expect from Vista's audio output level? XP is capable of so much more.

;y max volume in Vista, with a motherboard soundcard, is ear shattering. What kind of card is it?

It is integrated with the motherboard, listed as "Realtek High Definition Audio".

Sound in Vista should be the same as Xp. I can only think of 3 possibilities off the top of my head.
1. Check the speakers are plugged in properly, powered up, and all speaker cables and cables to sound output are in tight.
2. Under control panel/ sound, check that speakers are set as default device. You may find that you have another device, such as a spdif, set to default.
3. Make sure speakers are configured in the above panel. Click on speakers once, then configure, and make sure you have the correct setup, 2, 5.1, or whichever you have, and follow the wizard through.
4. Ensure you have not got anything plugged in in the way of headphones, and that your system doesnt think its running through headphones.
5. Check that the speaker cables are plugged into the correct outputs. If you have one in mic or headphone socket, sound will benext to norhing.
Ok, thats 5 not 3. I just thought of a couple more

reno1217 -- It's a box, not a notebook. Increasing the volume through the keyboard does not help.

Open sounds in your control panel. Highlight your speakers icon, then click properties. Click the enhancements tab. Make sure that "voice cancellation" is UNchecked. Make sure that "equalizer" and "Loudness equalization" are checked. If you highlight equalizer and look at the settings dropdown box, you may have some presets to use. Apply and ok out of there.
