Vista install on over an xp system
Hi there,

I am new here so i am not sure if this is the right place to post this. If not i am sorry and could someone please move it to the right area. Thanks.

My Step-son has a laptop with Windows XP installed. He has many many programmes and save games etc on this laptop. His Dad wants to install Vista over the XP system.

I am wondering what problems this could cause? Would he lose access to saved game data? Or existing programmes such as Excel, Word, Adobe etc?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jamie

Well there is always a certain risk when upgrading anything. Some of his programs may not work since there are known capatibility issues with Vista with some applications. What version of XP does he have, and does it have the SP2 on it?? Also, what version of Vista does he want to install??

I think he has XP home with SP2 but cant be sure. The answer that i am getting from him is that his dad wants to "install the latest Vista".

I am really not sure that an upgrade is necessary as it seems to be sufficient for his purposes. He does mainly gaming if truth be told but he has other packages as previously mentioned which i am hoping (possibly in vain!) will be of use for homework next year when he goes to High School.

I dont want the hassle of upgrading if it could result in loss of data. Especially as it is an OEM edition of XP and there is no way to go back.

Also be aware that Vista has much bigger hardware requirements that XP. I would need to know processor speed, memory, hard disk space, full specs if possible to even tell you whether it would be a good idea or not. Furthermore, there are six different versions of Vista. The latest Vista does not mean much. Please provide full computer specs if possible and we can go from there.
