I've seen the Microsoft page re: Updates and tried some of the suggestions but nothing changed.

One other thing I have noticed. Windows Defender does not get new definitions now. I get a message something about needing to "elevate" the request.

Referee, due to the use of Hex code in that type of post, I can't readily do a full comparison.


That is why I asked for you to save it as a TEXT file type using the registry editor and just upload that using the attachments Window.

Rollin' Rog, sorry I haven't gotten back to you on this but I find it harder recently to get to my computer and for some reason TG.org doesn't notify me re: new postings to my threads. Anyway... "Enum" is missing. I tired doing what you suggested "Use mine to import to the registry if yours is missing. Download, unzip and double click the .reg file" and the file turns up on Note Pad but does not get incorporated my my "W32Time" in the Registry. After double-clicking on the ".reg?" file, do I do anything else? Thanks again.

You may have a registry trick sending it to notepad -- as I do.

In that case, just right click on it and you should see a "merge" option in the context menu.

If not, then run regedit and select File > Import and grab it that way.

Rollin' Rog, Enum is now part of my Registry W32Time. I did notice that under "Default" "Data" the value is not set. Should there be a number there? Also, the time Sync still does not work. I have noticed that Windows Update downloads 26 or 27% and then stops with the same Error code: 80072F78.

Dang, I had high hopes for that. Did you test the time sync on multiple servers after a reboot? I should have suggested that ...

There is nothing under "default data" to set.

Also could you paste or upload the "text" version of the registry key -- although I don't expect to find any further differences, there are lines I can't easily verify from the hex code.

To save the text version you must select "text" in the "save as file type" dialog -- not "registry file".

You should see a "manage attatchments" option in your post window -- unless you have the "quick reply" mode enabled.

Or you can just paste it since it wasn't very long.

Unfortunately I'm probably just grasping at straws now -- since I would have expected the service to run properly if you rebooted and retested after making the import.

The Windows update error seems to point right at the time sync problem.

Rollin' Rog, just an update to this problem. I have contact Microsoft's Security site and am working with a tech there to try to resolve this problem. One thing I did notice though, I have a Dell laptop that I had on yesterday and I was able to download and install Windows Updates, I couldn't sync the clock. I am thinking that maybe the clock thing has something do to with the fact that I'm in South Korea?? Anyway, I thought I would give you an update to these two issues.

Well that is what I was wondering too with respect to the question about time zones.

It might be instructive, if possible, to take that laptop to another location and connect through a different service if possible.

But evidently the sync problem is not a show stopper with regards to Windows update. There must be some other issue there.

Your MS tech may have you send him or look at that actual Windows Update log, if resetting the update files doesn't do anything.

Winup problems are a specialty in themselves. I usually duck and cover when I see them, so I'll be interested in the approach he takes.

Rollin' Rog, the MS tech advised me to contact my ISP to check the "settings." (I asked the tech which "settings" and he just said to contact the ISP and ask them to review the settings.) The tech advised this after I told him three times that the error code is: 80072F78 (which, according to what I read when I Googled the number has something to do with time.) Anyway, I'll let you know what I find out.

Lol, well I don't have a clue as to what settings could be involved either, and I presume the laptop has the same settings as the desktop.

But the fact that neither can sync, yet the laptop can get the updates, suggests there is a different problem with the desktop.

By the way, did he, or we, ever verify that the "BITS" service was running on this computer? That's Background Intelligent Transfer Service in "services.msc".
