Yes it's a vital service as far as Windows Update is concerned; sometimes its absence will generate an error message, but Winup won't work with out it.

Anyway, on the plus side, if they can't solve your problem for you atleast you're not out any bucks to em'.

Rollin' Rog, how can I add a Internet time server to the list of servers in the "Date and Time" in "Internet Time?"

See attachment for the registry location. Right click on "servers" in the left pane and select New > String Value. Give it an appropriate number, then right click on it and select modify to edit the data value.

Rollin' Rog, the Update problem appears to be solved with the help of a Microsoft Tech. See his suggestions below:

error code 80072ee7 was also found in your WindowsUpdate.log file)

At this time, let us perform the following steps to troubleshoot the Windows Update 0x80072F78 error. The Internet time syncing problem could also be resolved by the same steps.

Step 1: Turn off all third party programs security programs, such as Firewall, anti-virus and anti spyware programs.

Step 2: Reset Winsock
=============
1. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
2. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Please enter the following command, and press enter.

Netsh winsock reset

4. A message stating "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog" will appear. Please restart the computer.

Step 3: Reset TCP/IP, proxy and DNS
=============
1. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
2. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Please enter the following commands, and press enter after each

NETSH INT IP RESET
NETSH WINHTTP RESET PROXY
IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS

Please check if the issue persists.

After I followed his instructions, Windows updated with no problems. I still can't sync my computer's time with an Internet time server but that is a minor problem compared to the Update issue. Thanks for all of your help and maybe the instructions given my the Microsoft tech might help other TG.com users.

Hmmm, I thought we did all that at one time or another. Perhaps we left out the "run as administrator", but usually you get an error if that is a problem.

Well, this one is a new one for me >>

NETSH WINHTTP RESET PROXY

However you showed no evidence of using a proxy.

Are you able to get an internet time sync now?
