Question Open each Folder in it's OWN Window
My new computer has, of course, Windows Vista.
My question is, WHY can't I make each Folder open in it's own window ?

See, I open Documents, click on Tools, Folder Options.
Then, under Browse folders, I select "Open each folder in it's own window".
Well, it just does NOT take the order !
I will click on "Open each in the same", Apply, OK.
Then I go back again, click on "Open in it's own", Apply, OK.
It simply does Not matter !

HOW can I get each Folder to open in it's OWN Window ?
This is a real pain in the ***.
I am hoping that somebody can give me some insight.

I can give you some insight but not the kind you're looking for. I never tried using the new folder window option in Vista before but sure enough, now that I have its broken on my system as well. I even tried various combinations of classic folder and launch in seperate process settings in addition to the open folder in a new window setting and nuthin'. If there is some other dependancy, its well hidden from view it seems.

Maybe it'll be fixed in a service pack or optional update or someone will or has hacked it or maybe you'll have to upgrade to XP.

I still to this day can not understand why anyone would want a new window for every folder.

Right click the folder and select "Open" and a new window will open just like it does in XP.

If you want to open folders in a new window by default, press alt and a bar will come up, select tools, then options. And you should find what you need there.

Smile Thanks
Dave, I will tell you WHY it is that I want to open each Folder in it's OWN Window.
I think it is rather stupid and a waste of time when I have to keep REOpening Documents every timne that I want to open another Folder. Is that simple enough ?
See, I DownLoad a lot of Zip Folders with Music in them.
I open my Documents, then my Music Folder (my Documents disappears), then the Folder with the Music in it. (Music Folder then disappears) I then want to take this music out & put it in my Music Folder. Soooo, I have to ReOpen Documents, then Music, & then I can put these songs where they belong. For the next Folder, I must repeat it all again & again.
Anyways, Thank You.
I found that when I right-click on them, like you suggested, that works.

Right click open/new window may work like it does in XP but just clicking on the folder does not open a new window, UNLIKE XP when the setting is in effect. In my book that's an extra click and once again, not as efficient (for those of us who love efficency where its important to us).

I think you really do need to be a little more understanding DaveA that a lot of us have some specific desires/needs and we're raising our hackles when we can't get the same thing done in Vista as efficently.

Some things in Vista I wished were in XP because they work better in Vista; the network places for instance makes me more efficent in Vista, not XP.

Have a little mercy for we poor souls!

I had the same problem but I found that if I closed the folder tree on the left side of the window that I could open each folder in its own window. Since then I have had no problem.

This new Window thing reminds me of the Windows 2.8 to 3.11 days. That was the way it was and no changing it. One would end up with so many Windows open and you would run out of resources. Then Windows 95 and 98 came along, and we had experts teaching new users how one MUST use separate panes for each folder. To this day I know one instructor that is still doing the same thing using XP. He even teaches them to make a folder on the desktop call "Program Manager" so he can find his programs!
