Nope, I already checked, neither process are running, and when I search for the .exe nothing comes up.

Strange, why would I be getting the BSOD's if the processes aren't even running?

Ok...I think it's pretty evident that at some point here you had the same virus as me. I'll watch for your resolution. I can certainly relate to the pain you're going through. I was up til 1am yesterday fighting the BSOD's and finally just got lucky today. If I find anything related, I'll let you know.

Thanks a ton, I really appreciate it. This has definitely been the worse 'virus experience' I've ever had. Usually after an hour or two of digging around I can get rid of the problem. I've been completely helpess with this however, because of the constant BSOD's. Well, you know, haha.

I just ran windows defender and it's not finding the 'win32/e404' anymore. I'm going to cross my fingers and try running a few more scans.

I ran through your posts again. You've probably done this, but have you run that smitfraudfix.exe file in safe mode yet? I did it and got those access denied messages I mentioned, but maybe the clean cycle actually fixed something else at the time.

I have two others with similar symptoms at work to fix tomorrow (or today depending on what coast you live on). Best of luck again.

My last alternative before giving up and dumping my stuff to dvd and reformatting would have been to try to install a second OS like WinXp and then run my antispyware stuff from there. Luckily, I didn't have to go there.

Thanks for your input mmichaels -- it does certainly look like this is a new exploit going around.

I am leaving the malware issues to Cookiegal who is helping in a separate thread he has posted in the malware forum.

Normally we do not permit duplicate threads -- but I just wanted to rule out system or hardware related issues in this thread.

Yeah, I'm glad to learn somebody else has had the same problems as me (well not glad, but you know what I meen). I was very close to thinking this was a hardware issue.

invain: did chkdsk make any significant repairs?

You can view the log by running eventvwr.msc and opening the Applications log > Wininit entry.

You can copy the log to a notepad file and upload it here if it is extensive.

I just tried running combofix again in safemode and I got the BSOD again, almost cried.

When I search for netproject in the registry it finds c:\program files\netproject\waun.exe, and then two other strings that I'm not sure about. I'm still baffled, C:\pf\netproject doesn't exist, and I've never seen the process waun.exe running. Even in normal mode there are no un-ordinary processes running.

I can't seem to find teh wininit entry in the event viewer. I wasn't paying much attention since it took almost an hour, so I can't tell you if chkdsk made any repairs.

It would have been in the Applications log -- did you look there?

And what repeating errors are you getting in the System log?

invain - I know my Registry mentioned some NetProject files that seemed to not exist. They were dll's but I can't remember their names. One thing I did do that it looks like you haven't is I deleted every single registry entry that mentioned NetProject. It took less than 10 minutes to do. Maybe it's worth a very CAREFUL shot?

I just tried running itunes - bsod again.

If I can't get this figured out before tonight I'm going to just do a clean install of Vista. I've wasted too much time and gotten nowhere. Could have re-installed 5 times by now.
