WININET.DLL not found error -- due to Virus ? Help !
We have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ24OE, with Windows Vista, purchased Dec 2007. I am having trouble getting the rest of the specs of our system (SP version ,etc.), because MSCONFIG, and nearly every other application is currently failing, even when run out of safe mode MSDOS prompt

The machine boots up through Windows logon, and experiences problems loading the desktop (JUSched.exe, and Vaio Update, for example). They give an error that WinInet.dll cannot be found, and it suggests reinstalling the application. Then a Java Platform SE Binary has stopped error occurs.

We have Panda AV 2008 (v3.01.00) running, which seems to be one of the only things that works currently. We cannot get a network connection to the internet. MS Office still loads. When trying to open any folders, we get a 'Class Not Registered Error'.

Panda's log shows that a Virus in c:Windows\System32\WinInet.dll was discovered and disinfected earlier today, which is when the problems started.

I ran the system Restore to the last saved point (Yesterday, 4/6), but the same problem still occured.

I poked around the tech logs, and DLd a WinInet.dll file, and was able to get it installed onto the PC using a flash drive. When we booted up, we got into an endless loop of Windows Explorer trying to load and reload, with no way out.

Our Vaio did not come with a recovery CD. I tried DLing one via a BitTorrent, but it did not DL for me.

Any suggestions on what I might try ?

Thank You !

I'd take advantage of warranty. Doing things, you're doing (torrents) may void it.
