I did find it. Clicked on it. Opened it and was asked to put the nameon "search" and did not found my doc ? Would it had saved in under another name ??? How could I simply search by doc created on that date ?

It wouldn't have saved it under another name and deleted the original. Even if it had, and you know some precise text it contains, you could search for the text -- takes longer though.

You can use AgentRansack to search for docs modified on a certain date, if it was created then, that will be the same.

Windows search utility may offer a few more options; you may need to read the Help and Support description on how to make best use of it.

the original document tile was @UKEcommerce_regulation_ISP_liability (3)

One 8/04 version I found was in

C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local|Microsoft|Windows|Temporary Internet Files\Low\Control.IES\TOL49LOA

I tried to search with 'contain' : ISP specifying date after 07/04 but couldn't find it.

It's so strange, it can't have just disappeared.

Could anybody hacked my PC ?

The 3 indicates that that folder contained 3 versions of a document by the same name.

If you couldn't find it by searching for all instances of "ISP", it's not to be found.

No I really don't think this is a hacking issue unless someone knowledgeable of the document could be looking for something sensitive in it, and was a virtual professional at doing it.

If you have ever run chkdsk on the drive and the file had corruption issues, it could have disappeared because chdsk would have deleted its index entry -- but if you searched the root drive for partial text and found nothing -- chdkdsk did not recover it even in partial form. It does sometimes save "crosslinked" files in "found.0000" numeric entries on the root drive.

No, hard to beleive, no word document on 09/04 before 6pm !!! Not only I am sure to have saved more than once but even not, I would have been asked to save before closing.

I think you're going to have to resign yourself to the fact that it's gone, or never got there in the first place.

I think I have to resign but for the future, I would love to know what happened and how to avoid. I am doing this WE an online exam and I can only hope the work won't disappear as I will not be able to represent it again. I should certainly work on the laptop running XP. Tkx again Rollin Rog

Well you can test the method first, saving and retrieving something from where it was saved.

If this is a joint project of some kind you might consider something like:

No, it's not a joint project, just the result of my own personal pain going from one PC to another.
Maybe related to all this, I've just received an error message from Microsoft : "had to shut down... unexpected error occured etc.." (3 times shut down, one before the lost). I did report and came two solutions : error caused by Canon Pixma iP2500 + Spybot (Spybot is the program I run just after closingmy word doc hat disappeared). I tried to get updates from Canon but could not find anything about the Pixam iP2500. I have nothing concerning Spybot. Would you have any suggestion ? Tkx.

Unless the same error is repeating it's best just to ignore it. If it is repeating and involves specific software then I would uninstall and reinstall the software.

By the way, I hadn't been aware of this before, but I just discovered a slew of hidden recovered files created by chkdsk on my dodgy USB drive.

I didn't know they were there because they were treated as "protected system files" and normally require you to have the option hide those unchecked in Folder Options > View.

If you have anything there they will be on the root (c:) directory and tagged as "Found.nnn" where "nnn" is a number.

Hi again, Ok, I can be stuborn, but I would really like to undersatnd what did happened to that doc and what I did wrong.
I explored a new idea : "google" for the doc. It founded 2 doc with multipe versions "cached". Result : it sounds like it would be mine, version 08/04 16H..
Now one big question : Could you tell me how google could find it "cached" ? I would be grateful. I tried to attached the screen shot but says : exceedes the limit storage etc....when I tried to email it I also get a message as it is a heavy doc while actually only 18 pages!!!! What does it carry ? Remember, originally it was 75 pages and I deleted the extra bits. I used the "show modifications" tool. By simply going to "view timeline" I could see all I had done on that day from my PC : all different versions of the doc but also my surfings and postings etc... This is incerdible. How can google access these informations ? TKX for your support,

OK. I come back here again -not sure if this is the appropriate way of doing it. My word doc was finally recovered after few weeks of searchs by Google cached versions.
Now again, another document, once again a long and of course important deadlined one - mysteriously disappeared !!!!!! The doc was the same way sent originally as attachmenof a google mail then was "saved as" in file doc on the PC : Win Vista.
Could not find it in "Search", nor "advanced search" nor google nor "recent items". Isn't that strange ? Anybody got any idea because it because really "painfull" as even taking the precaution of continiously saving documents just disappear.
thanks for help and especially, I would love to hear if other ista users had the same experience.

The the gmail attachment, is a TEMP file and it is being saved in the temp folder. Do a Save As and select the location that you want it saved in. It appears to me that you are NOT using the "Save as" action. If you are using the Save as, then you are NOT selecting a NEW location for the new save as copy.

The saving in a TEMP folder will not allow the the search function to find it. The Temp folder is NOT normally searched as it is a hidden system file.

Since you did NOT open this file from Word it will NOT appear on the recent list.

Sorry I missed your last reply; I don't know what's up with Google -- do you have their search indexer installed? I don't have it so I don't know what it does.

However have you tried right clicking on the "host" directory in which this document was first saved and selecting Properties > Previous Versions and seeing if the document can be located in one of the "previous version" archives there? These are not shown in a normal search -- and even so-called "deleted" files may be found

Hi Dave A thanks for your help.
Beleive me, I DID save as the gmail attachment and DID saved it in a new file document. Actually, the first time that happened, it was my own document that was lost after sveral savings on the same day. I did opened the attachment word doc, "save as" and choosed a specific directory to save it in.
This last time, it happened to my partner and beleive the first experience was painful enough to be double, triple careful to regularey SAVE the word doc. but once again, it just magically disappeared !!!! I can tel you that I am usually very rational but start to think strange things happens with this new PC/Vista.
Rolling'Rog I don't know what the search indexer is. Where would I find the "host" directory ? The doc was created in another PC, sent by email - gmail atachment - and worked on in this PC. Could you please tell me more. Tkx.
Thi what I finally found last time when googled for the word doc :
http://127.0.0.1:4664/cache?event_id...3HZGUoCL3qnCYI

This is one version of C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\internetcontent\UKEcommerce_regulation_ISP_liabilit y(3).doc from your personal cache.
The file may have changed since that time. Click here for the current file.
