We may have finally stumped Microsoft!
I may just have become part of Microsoft history! And you won't believe this. The Microsoft techs surely didn't!

I am running an ABIT motherboard with an AMD Athlon x64 processor, 2.2Ghz, 2Gb's of DDR RAM and a 256 MB GeForce video card. I'm just getting into to running x64 operating systems and although I had success with XP Pro x64 I chose Vista Home Premium x64 becuase there is more availability of programs and apps.

Anyway, I loaded Vista x64, downloaded all my Windows Updates and then installed Service Pack 1. Now before I installed SP1, in System Properties, it read 2047 MB's or 2GB's of RAM, as it should. Right after I installed SP1 it showed my installed memory as 16GB's !!!. The Microsoft techs couldn't believe it! So now, after running some diagnostics on my system and then recording the results, I am now waiting for them to call back with some kind of answer.

By the way, just to do my part, I ran the Vista Memory Diagnostic tool to see if the sticks were ok...and they were. I also removed one module, rebooted and checked System Properties again. This time it show I had 8GB's of RAM installed!. Then I did the same thing for the other module. So I don't think it is a hardware issue. Besides , everything ran fine before SP1.

The reason I am writing you guys about this is, first of all, the fact that I don't trust Microsoft and second, if you or someone else could lick this on your own you might just be famous. I'm exaggerating here of course! But what an opportunity for myself or someone else if we could find a simple solution to this on are own. I've tried doing alot of Googling on the subject myself but have not come up with any solutions.

And even Microsoft admits, they have not seen this yet. They have seen it where it shows less memory than is installed, but not more. By the way, Microsoft says that it's not hurting anything by showing more Ram than is installed, it's just that I like my system to run perfect and , you've got to admit, with Vista, that's been a challenge.

So that's it. I'll be intersted in hearing your comments!

SP1 has some changes in how it reports installed memory. My guess [and it is only a guess] is that there is some bug or issue between the bios installed on your board and sp1. There may be a hot fix released OR abit may release a new bios that fully supports sp1. Here is the MSKB article that explains the difference in reported and used memory.

I do not know if you would call it a MS issue; more likely how that particular bios counts the memory.

So long as it is working well, I wouldn't worry about it.

SP1 just hasn't addressed all the RAM reading issues yet.

If you don't trust MS why are you using their product? There are other options.
