Solved: Install Vista SP1?
What are the members' thoughts on installing Vista's SP1? I have heard that after installing this SP, some programs don't work. Would it be better to wait until the bugs are worked out before installing it?

Dunko9, thanks for the reply. I think I'll wait awhile to see of Microsoft sorts out any bugs.

If your PC uses drivers known by Microsoft to be suspect, it will not show SP1 as an available update. My HP Dv6500 series laptop has an audio driver that falls into that category so I don't get SP1. Sniff. Sniff. Missing all the fun, maybe.

mrss, I have heard about a problem with SP1 messing up drivers, which is why I don't want to update until Microsoft works the kinks out. Frankly, I am tired of being a beta tester for Microsoft. Maybe by the time that Vista SP2 comes out, the kinks in SP1 will be pretty much worked out.

I think you can download and apply the update manually via the MS website.

And I've installed sp1 on my laptop(vista basic),and all seems to be fine so far.(vista booting and starting faster,programs starting fatster as well,copying files are faster too....)Will test it to fing if there are any bugs

CCjon, I don't know. I have had some problems lately with Vista not allowing me to update Windows which I just fixed today via help from a good Microsoft tech. Something tells me to wait with SP1. I hate computer problems.

It should be installed using Windows Update and you should NOT have issues. If you are missing the required drivers, SP1 will NOT be in your listing.

But, if you download the patch, and install it, and you are missing some required drivers, then you may have issues.

I second CCJon.

System will be improved-- err less crappy.

I vote for update.... have done so on different systems, would not roll back at all.

How much does it coast to buy SP1? And why can't SP1 pick out the drivers? Do you expect the hardware makers to have the divers for SP1 so soon?

May be if SP1 is out for 2 or 3 years but NOT so soon.And Microsoft drivers have never bean really that good .

Thanks guys for the responses. I don't think you can buy SP1. I think you can only download it, correct?

My new compaq laptop didn't show the windows update for sp1 but I wanted it for some stability issues.
I had to download the entire 5 lang pack file for 400+ meg. The install took about 40 minutes and it was been a great upgrade as I dont have anymore system issues. I'm not saying you wouldn't but mine is very stable and have had no compatibility probs since the update.

Well... I decided to download and install SP1 but then for some reason, it wouldn't install. I contacted MS and a very good tech gave me the solution. See below for the solution he gave me in case you know of anyone who tries to install SP1 but can't. (The problem I had was the instalation appeared to initiate but nothing happened. The "progress line" showed no activity after several hours.) Anyway, I followed the MS tech's suggestion and SP1 installed with no problems.

Step 1: Download Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer
===================================================
1. Download Windows Vista SP1 from the link below according to your System Type:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 32-bit (Size: 434.5MB)
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...-X86-wave0.exe

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 64-bit (Size: 726.5MB)
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...-X64-wave0.exe

2. Please save it on the Desktop.

Step 2: Install Windows Vista SP1 in Clean Boot mode
========================================
Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to avoid conflict when installing Vista SP1:

1. Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.

Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

2. Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click "Startup", click "Disable All" and click "OK".

Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We can manually run these programs later.

4. Please double click the downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP1.

To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer.
