Windows Update SP1 and security
Recently, Vista has been getting very annoying. Every time I boot I have a Windows Security Alert come up telling me there are security issues and when I click and access the "Windows Security Center" I get this:

By db110193

It says that it can't find Virus Protection and yet as you can see in the bottom right of me screen, BitDefender is there...
It says Windows Defender is turned off and yet if I click "Turn on Now" it comes up with a thing saying "Searching for Definitions" It then fails to find any definitions and still says it is turned off...

Also, I had installed Vista Service Pack 1, only to find that my internet didn't work, I tried a few things but I had had a frustrating day and I could not be bothered to fight with Vista over the issue so I did a System Restore and got everything back to normal. However, Windows Update now has this:

By db110193

As you can see, one of the ones was successful but when I type "winver" into run, it doesn't say that service pack 1 is installed and Vista shows no signs that it is. Constantly, Vista is coming up with Windows Update and saying it needs to install Service Pack 1, when I try to it doesn't work or it seems to work and then it then prompts me to reboot, I do so and it fails to install. Is there a way to completely remove evidence of the existence of service pack 1 and then try again? Or an alternative?

Thanks.

The warning message re the security settings not being right are quite normal and is just Micrsofts way off telling you that you do it their way or no way!

Under the antivirus section of the warning just go the find a program button and there should be a box somewhere there that advises you have your own program and will monitor it yourself. That will then stop MS from warning you all the time about this one issue.

You can turn Defender ON as it has been improved quite a lot and is not a bad program to have running in the program - not the best but does get most of the spyware and other stuff.

At days end, just right click on the warning icon in the sys tray and select exit and it will go away til the next reboot.

That's the problem though, I can't turn off windows defender... It says "searching for definitions" and comes up with a green progress bar however after a minute or so, it comes up with something saying: "There are no new definitions available to download to windows defender" and then remains off.

Run a search on each of the 'failed' updates by their names, ex. KB936330 You will see that this one is for the sp1 language pack; you have reverted back to Vista original build therefore you don't need this one. Search for the rest of the failed installs and if they are applicable to your current set up, run them manually rather than using Windows Update, this may set things back to normal.

Concerning the sp1 install; did you use Windows Update or did you install usng the full stand-alone 400+ meg download?

I used Windows Update to install SP1.

I have run a search of KB936330 in Programs and Features > Installed Updates but they do not appear their. And when you say run them manually... how do you do that?

KB936330 is Service Pack 1 (sp1), my previous post I said it was a language pack, this is not so. What I mean't is if you have other updates that failed to install, Google search those updates and run them directly off the MS server rather than using Win Update. I suggest you don't use the full stand-alone sp1, though I did without any issues. More on that here:

Did you try any of the repair methods in the article? At this point I strongly suggest you run a disk check. If you opt to try the install again, be sure to update your drivers first, particularly the nVidia drivers. I doubt it’s a ram problem, you would have had issues previously.

You may want to unplug any peripheral devices during the install just to be sure those aren't interfering.

Other than that, perhaps a BIOS Update if available.

I tried number 3, the disk thing but I got this:

"Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart
Windows and run sfc again.

C:\Windows\system32>"

If I restart, it still doesn't work and if I boot in safe mode it still doesn't work.

I tried checking the disc for errors and got to stage 4 but It was taking ages. Going at about 1% every half an hour so I gave up.

You need to let chkdsk run; if there are errors on the disk you will have problems.

Ok, I will let it run overnight.

But surely that's not the problem because SP1 installed before... I just did a simple system restore and now I can't install it again.

Ok, earlier today it stopped working altogether. I booted and it said Vista service pack 1 didn't install correctly, reverting changes. And it stayed like that for 10 minutes doing nothing. What should I do? should I try and install it in safe mode or something?

Are you getting any disk activity, flashing lights?
It will take longer than ten minutes to fix a stalled install.

Well to even get onto windows I had to do a system restore. I had some work to do and I had to get on. So, I am not sure as it has gone back to saying. Installing service pack stage 1 of 3 - 0% then doesn't do anything again.
