Solved: BSODs are getting annoying
i have been getting BSODs in Vista x64 aswell, infact this is where the problem started and i wasn't sure why it was happening but now having done the memory test and eliminating that possibility i think that Vista x64 maybe a bad install and i will re-install it without SP1, as i have heard that some people have issues with it.

here are the BSODs that i received in Vista x64:

the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL has been occurring repeatedly.

oh, one more thing. most of these BSODs have been occurring while i have been playing DoD Source, Zombie Panic Source and other Source games, (in both XP Pro and Vista x64) which leads me to believe that maybe Steam could also be the cause though i am not 100% sure on this.

edit

well it happened again, (in Vista x64) here is the dumpcheck, (from Vista x64)

This will be more difficult to sort out than the XP BSODs. The ones in Vista are varied and either involve core system drivers or just indicate "memory corruption".

Drive or File system issues are suspect; or possibly outside firewalls or antivirus programs.

>> more information is needed:

1 >> when did these blue screens begin?
Open the Control Panel >Performance Information and Tools > Advanced > Reliability Montitor.

Scroll back in time and see if there is a distinct beginning to the BSODs, and if so, what changes may have preceeded them.

2 >> is the vista system home built, or an off the shelf system?

3 >> Are any problems flagged by the system health diagnostic available in "Performance Information ...."?

4 >> has chkdsk been run on the drive?

5 >> if you run eventvwr.msc and look at the system log, what errors are repeating there? You can copy a representative few to the clipboard and paste them here one at a time.

6 >> Is anything overclocked?

7 >> Post a HijackThis Scanlog:

Download and install HijackThis. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

What make of sound card do you have? Some Creative, Realtek and SigmaTel card drivers are incompatible with SP1.
I have a Creative Xi-Fi card and I cannot use SP1 on my Vista machine :-(

mine is a Realtek onboard sound card.

i have been noticing gradually degrading performance in Vista x64 so when i get the time i am going to format that partition and re-install it w/o SP1 and see how it goes.
@ Rollin' Rog i would try those things, but i can barely even load up this site and check my email in Vista x64 atm (i think a format is best at this point)

i would switch back to Vista x32 but the reason i got Vista x64 is so that i can utilize my 4gig of RAM which 32bit Windows can only see 3.25gig. and there is a mod i want to play that states it needs "3 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)" and in Vista x32 it tells me it cannot even find 3gig!

and the new games coming out will make use of multi-core processors and i will need the 4gig i have to be able to play smoothly

By all means, a format is often the quickest way for the more experienced -- it should rule out all but hardware incompatibilities.

For software there are two good ways to test -- Safe Mode or Clean Booting >>

First, restart in Safe Mode if necessary -- (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu) or Normal mode

Then:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;310353
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 << for Vista, but applies equally to XP, and better written.

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

>> =By the way the ram is fully utilized in 32bit Windows -- but some of it is assigned in the BIOS to support memory mapping for hardware detection there -- so Windows does not report it. SP1 will report the full installed ram -- but the usage remains the same.

If you want to utilize more ram -- you will have to BOTH install 64 bit Windows AND get more ram.

only happened once just after i rebooted from installing the latest update:

Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB938371)

edit

i think i have figured out what is causing the majority of the BSODs

Why are you starting multiple threads for the same problem?

Which one do you want closed?

this one and

i have installed Vista x64 again and it seems to be running fine now. i installed SP1 immediately after installing Windows, even before drivers, then i installed drivers, then updates, it runs much smoother like this.
