Aero not working.
Hi
My system as follows: Asus M2n32-sli Deluxe mobo, Nvidia 8800gt graphics, 2 Gig corsair mem 6400, AMDx2 4600, creative Audigy2 sound card, 250 gig western did and 200 gig Sam. I have loaded vista ultimate but aero doesn't work, also media player freezes when loading video ( but ok with music ). I would be grateful for any help. I have setting as stated by microsoft eg: transparency, aero, etc. Drivers all new for vista.

What theme do you have now, Basic or Windows Classic? Is the Aero theme available in the theme settings?

Do you have the transparent title bars? Is it just Flip3D that doesn't work?

If you are not getting Aero at all, run regedit.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ Software/ Microsoft/ Windows/ DWM.
Set Composition to 1 and CompositionPolicy to 2.

Go to the service console and restart the Desktop Window Management service.

Hi Elvandil
I've checked the registry and the settings were set at what you suggested already. Don't know what to try next!! Been searching the net for answers as well, but no joy. As I am new to Vista ( not xp though) is there anything I should be switching on, or something I'm not doing to run flip 3D ? The DVD's are new 32 and 64 bit versions, so I can't think there is a fault with the DVD's. Thanks. P.S. Go to the service console and restart the Desktop Window Management service. Could you give me a bit more info on this ? ( I mean how)

Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services > Desktop Window Manager.

So, is it Flip3D that you are having problems with, or Aero?

It's flip 3D that does not work. I've tried the ' holding windows+tab key' and 'windows+Tab+Ctrl' .........nothing!

Try creating a shortcut with this as the target:

C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe DwmApi #105

Thanks, but still problems.
I've been trying to sort things out, but still have problems, eg: freezing when looking at programs, freezing when I try to load my wireless adapter, plus others. One little tip I discovered is, if you format the h/drive with vista, it just does a quick format and if you have problems, you will get more/other when you reinstall. You must do a total format, I used 'DBAN'. I shall report back if/when I'm sorted.

If only a total format works for you, it imples disk problems. The only difference is that the full marks bad sectors on the drive.

Better test the drive (and even memory with the Vista DVD) if locking up is a problem.

Free Hard Drive Testing Applications:
Manufacturer's Tests
HD Tune
CheckDisk 1.03 (Marks bad sectors as unusable.)
HDAT2 (Diagnostics and bad sector recovery)
MHDD Low-level Diagnostics
Bootable Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Floppy or CD Image (works on most drives)

Hard Drive Manufacturers' Diagnostic Utilities Links:
TachTech
BleepingComputer

Thanks again Elvandil. Sorted now. The freezing was down to changing the balanced to high performance in the power options. Everything is fine now, apart from media player crashes if I try to use it ( just opening will make it crash) any ideas on that one. Thanks.

Is it an upgrade or one that came with the OS? Did you install any codec packs?
