File corruption in Vista after MS download
I have my Vista system set to automatically download Microsoft system upgrades. Two days ago I saw the MS shield symbol come up telling me there were system upgrades. I clicked the icon and went to bed. I did not monitor the instalation of the system upgrades. The next morning when I booted the system a message popped up saying that logonui.exe was corrupted and that I needed to run chkdsk to correct. The system came up normally and all the applications I use seemed to work fine except when I tried opening the MS games folder. The folder was empty and when I did a search for one of the game exe's it reported another corrupted file.

I then tried to run chkdsk but it simply does not run when you restart the system. I tried searching for the executable and it could not be found. I assume that it also is corrupted. This has happened before and the only thing I could do was rebuild the hard disk. I would really like to avoid that.

Any ideas on how to recover? Am I dealing with some malware? Can I download chkdsk from somewhere?

Try running system restore to a time before the updates were applied. As far as CHKDSK open an elevated command prompt(start>type cmd>it will appear at top>right click it>select run as administrator>Type SFC SCANNOW.

Tried system restore
I forgot to mention that I tried system restore but it would not run because of file corruption. It directed me to chkdsk.

Here is the result of SFC /scannow
C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Thanks for the input but nothing seems to want to run.

You could download the Ultimate Boot cd. It downloads as an iso file then use Burncdcc to make a bootable cd of it and boot to it and checkdisk is on that cd.

Where is chkdsk?
I've got the boot disk working but I cannot find anything that looks like chkdsk. Could you give me directions as to how I can find it. Thanks.

If I remember correctly, you can use Active NTFS Reader for DOS from NTFS Tools on that disk.

I used Active NTFS Reader and searched for chkdsk.* using the Search function but it was not found. I manually searched also and found nothing.
Can I use chkdsk.exe from a XP system? If so, how can I get it onto the Vista system? I can burn a CD with the file but I would have to pull the boot CD in order to read it. Will Active NTFS Reader then read the new CD?

I just tried to run chkdsk from a separate CD after using the boot CD and Active NTFS Reader. It worked but I got the message "This program cannot be run in DOS mode." which is probably why it is not on the Boot CD.

After continuing explorations I have found that my chkdsk is not corrupt but the problem is when I try to schedule chkdsk to run when the system is restarted it does not run. Is there a boot configuration file I can manually modify so that I can force chkdsk to run on a restart?

OK.
There are two UBCDs:
- Ultimate Boot CD: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/index.html
- Ultimate Boot CD for Windows: http://www.ubcd4win.com/index.htm
The latter one includes chkdsk (http://www.ubcd4win.com/contents.htm)
