BSOD in Vista with AOL
I have pinpointed a BSOD that happens in AOL 9.0 VR (Vista Ready) and the newer AOL Desktop on my machine. If I am writing an email, and hit "attach file" in order to upload a file, I get a blue screen and the system shuts down. The screen pops up very fast, and it's difficult to get the numbers to send to you. But, it definitely happens at the exact moment each time I hit "attach file". Can anyone help?

All other programs seem fine, and the computer otherwise seems fine. The computer is about 8 months old and Vista and AOL have seemed fine working together until 2 days ago. Now this BSOD has crept in....not sure why.

Could be an antivirus program.

I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to %systemroot%\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder.%systemroot% is normally c:\windows. They are numbered by date. You can paste that address in address bar to get there.
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

This might point us to a non-system driver causing the error, if one exists for it.

>> Also post a HijackThis scanlog:

Download and install HijackThis. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

thanks, but i apologize....i don't know how to navigate to %systemroot%\minidump. I searched my computer and cannot find that file name or folder. I've never done a minidump like this. Thanks, and sorry for the trouble.

That is the same as c:\windows\minidump, assuming "c:" is your boot drive.

Just use Windows Explorer to get there.

If you go to Start > run, and copy/paste this there, you should get to the proper directory even if "c:" is not your boot drive.

%systemroot%\minidump

If you don't see anything there, do the following.

Run sysdm.cpl and go to Advanced > Startup and Recovery.

UN check "automatically restart".

Make sure "small minidump" is selected as the type.

See attachment.
