Have you tried it from the DVD?

Look at the System Restore tab in Computer properties. Is it turned off or absent?

Norton may have disabled it.

Hi Elvandil, thx for responding, system restore is totally absent 'non existing'. What should I do? Checked Norton but didn't know what changes to make.

I don't know much about 360, but it does have some backup functionality, so it may have replaced SR.

Did you try the DVD? I believe that it runs from its own program on the DVD.

I tried system restore thru the Vista Disk upon booting but seems system restore is not existing so nothing happened. By uninstalling Norton 360, do you think it will restore the System Restore back to functionality?. Norton 360 has the Backup and restore feature but I havent used it b4. My concern is that I have also lost the Parental Controls feature that comes with Vista.

Norton products have a reputation of being very difficult to remove and for leaving damage behind. I have no idea if it will restore the old configuration. A well-written application should be able to remove itself without leaving any problems behind, but this is Norton whose idea of a bug fix is advice to buy next year's version.

Hi xpsolutions,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding. Norton 360 does not disable System restore in Windows. Since Windows is alerting you that the file rstrui.exe can not be found, that can be an indication that the file has been infected.

The first step I would advise you to take would be to open Norton 360 and click on "Run LiveUpdate." After LiveUpdate has completed, please restart your computer in Windows Safe Mode, launch Norton 360 and perform a "Comprehensive Scan." If an infection is found, please let me know the name of the infection that Norton reports.

Please run LiveUpdate and scan your system and let me know the outcome.

Thank you,
Mike

Try running Spybot or post an HijackThis log in the Malware forum so experts can help you look for malware. A Norton scan is not likely to find anything of importance, if it even works and has not been disabled by any malware that may be present.

Your worst infection is probably Norton 360. You'll find similar horror stories in a search.

Thanks Mike for your response, I followed your instructions, got some viruses/spyware fixed. Also manually deleted some. did another comprehensive scan which now got a clean sheet. Still the problems persist.

Thanks Elvandil, attached is the Hijackthis log

Since this isn't the Malware forum, you would be better off posting this there. If they see no responses, you are more likely to get an evaluation. If you don't get help for a while, notify a mod.

PS. Actually paste the log in your post so it is more readable.
