Solved: Sleepless since SP1
Before SP1, I could push the sleep button and it would go to sleep and stay that way until I moved the mouse.

Since SP1, when I push the sleep button it goes to sleep but wakes up all by itself in about 20 seconds. I haven't noticed any other issues. I have plenty of HD space, AMD 5200, 2.6 Gz processor and 3 G's RAM and it's an HP desktop.

Any Ideas. Thanks

At a command prompt type POWERCFG DEVICEQUERY WAKE_ARMED this will give you a list of the devices that can wake your computer from sleep. By default it is generally the keyboard, mouse, modem. Therefore an internet connection is capable of waking your computer.

Thanks Lildragon, you hit it right on the head. My apologies to MS for blaming SP1.

About the same time that I installed SP1, I also converted my PC from wireless to a wired system with an ethernet cable. I unplugged the mouse and keyboard and it still restarted from sleep after about 20 seconds, but when I disconnected the ethernet cable, it stayed asleep.

Soooo, now that one problem is fixed, do you have any suggestions what might be causing the ethernet cable to cause the problem. It worked great with a USB adapter.

Thanks again for the help. I can live without the sleep mode, I only use it occasionally.

I also have an ethernet connection to the internet through my cable company and I have no problems with sleep state. Check with your internet provider. If you cannot resolve the problem you have two other options:

1. Just unplug the connection when you put it in sleep mode.

2. From an elevated command prompt (run as administrator) do the following to disble the device:
