Question Windows Vista - Problem with sound
Hi

I'm having a strange problem with my sound/speakers (on a labtop). Saturday evening I opened Medie Player, seeing as I wanted to enjoy some music. However, it didn't play at all, and I've no clue why. The strange thing is: My speakers do work. It plays sounds when I tell it to do so (testing sound in Windows), but it refuses to play everything else.

I've a Realtek Audio HD soundsystem on my computer, and I tried to update the drivers through Windows, but it wouldn't help .

So now I'm clueless... Got any good ideas?

If the previous post from lildragon did not work try right clicking on the speaker icon in the systray (where the clock is). Select volume mixer make sure the speaker and other audio settings are turned up.

Have you update to Vista SP1? It does cause problems with audio drivers including those from RealTek. For a while windows update would not install SP1 on machines with these drivers. However, before MS knew there was a problem lots of affected machines updated. My laptop was affected, I just fixed it earlier last night.

If you are affected here are directions for fixing it:
- uninstall SP1
- uninstall soundcard drivers
- find the most current drivers for you sound card (first go to the site of the laptop manufacturer then try realtek)
- reboot
install new drivers
- reboot
- reinstall SP1
- reboot
