Have you tried starting in Safe Mode from the F8 boot menu?

A quick fix might be to run System Restore and restore to a date prior to the problem.

You should run all available Security Scans as well and post a HijackThis Scanlog when you can. This could be done from Safe Mode with Networking support if y ou can get there.

Download and install HijackThis. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

I've tried the safe mode and the CMD still comes up.
And I can't access anything on that laptop so I can't download that
Sorry and thanks for trying.

I think you need to run checkdisk to resolve this.
If you come to the command prompt type in:
chkdsk /r and then hit enter exactly as it is typed in here.

So you never see a desktop? When cmd.exe loads what path does it show?

Do you have a startup repair option on your F8 screen?

If you do reach a command prompt, can you run

c:\windows\system32\rstrui.exe

? and have "System Restore" open?

When I type that in it says this:
'Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? <Y/N>'
When I say 'Y' and restart it does nothing.

I can't see the desktop.
I have the tartup repair option, when I click it it scans it or something and I restart and nothing happens.

In the Recovery/Repair Environment where you have the Startup repair, System Restore should also be an option, have you tried that?

Also, there is an option there for "command prompt"; if you select that you will see the command window at the path:

c:\windows\system32

You can run rstrui.exe from there, and if you wait a minute or so the System Repair utility should open.
