Huge Vista Problem!!?
Basically, I am running Microsoft Windows Vista™ Ultimate (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1.. Yes it is Genuine before you ask...

Anyway.. I use it as a Media Centre aswell, and with my TV Tuner I watch TV and other forms of media through Windows Media Centre..

One day.. I go to watch a Video that has been saved onto the system and I get incrediably bad playback.. the video would literally play in slow motion and the sound would be at the right speed. Making it impossible to watch! This is any video.. not just this one.. When I try and watch TV I get a message about missing video files required to play TV etc... and so I thought hmm.. what's all this about.

Anyway, When I quit the application I was prompted with a message saying that my Graphics card does not meet the minimum required specifications (64 MB Video Ram( and some features may not work correctly! So I thought.. well I'll try play the video through Media Player and same problem.

Fresh install of Vista now.. same!

Also.. I have done the obvious.. I've used the Windows Display Drivers (WDDM) for the ATI X800 Pro All In Wonder and ATI's official drivers aswell.. I also have a DirectX Output if needed!

I have Windows XP Installed on a seperate Hard Disk for that computer and the In Game Graphics and Films Play FINE!! No Issues What so ever!!!

After reading some answers.. I would like to say.. It was fine before Installing SP1 and for a while afterwards.. until the first time it started messing up about 1 month after install (approx)

But after fresh Install of Vista... It started within 1 day of it being used!

The problem is probably the videocard/tv tuner

Aero sucks up a fair amount of video processing, and since the tv tuner and video card are sharing the ram resources, its probably causing a problem. Try going back to a classic windows desktop, and see if this fixes the problem.

A few thoughts ...

I am assuming that your system was running fine and this issue just popped up... if so, had you just updated your ATI drivers? If so, did you try rolling them back to see if the problem was still present? (You may want to inspect all your Drivers and CODECS and make certain they are the latest available. VersionTrackerPro and Driverscan are 2 programs that help out with the detective work.)


Open up System Properties through Control Panel, click on Advanced and see what options are chosen for visual effects etc. Select the options one by one to see if they offer a solution to your problem.

An update of your video card might be your Ultimate answer (pun intended). The TV tuner card I use is an ATI Theater Pro 550. I used it in conjunction with an ATI X1650 card and currently use it with an ATI X1950 Pro card. The prices have really dropped of late and a new card will likely up your Experience Index results as well. I mention this information just for what it's worth... a few months ago I had Media Center go on the fritz with no apparent reason, other than the early RC1 of SP1 being installed. I did a fresh install and the problem persisted, my issue being that Media Center would not load at all. I did another fresh install of Ultimate 64, and by this time the public release of SP1 was available. I have had no more problems with Media Center since.
