Xcopy -- Xmove
(This is a VISTA question, even though at first it may sound like a "DOS" question.)

Back in the DOS days, starting with DOS-5 I think, two new commands were added that I wish I could have in VISTA...... XCOPY and XMOVE.

What made these commands so useful, is that they would go out, and using just a single command, search your entire hard disk for files that matched a certain criteria. Then, either COPY or MOVE those located files into one central directory. This of course made sorting the files very fast, easy and convienent. It would work something like this:

C:\xmove *.jpg c:\pictures /s /p

And with that single command line, ALL of your pictures would be moved or copied into the "Pictures" directory. Granted, you "might" be able to perform a similar function using "SEARCH", but it's just not quite the same.

What I want to be able to do, is to organize my thousands, and thousands of Digital pictures, that are scattered all over my 500-GB hard drive, into a single "pictures" directory WITHOUT having to tediously go folder to folder, sub-directory to folder, sub-sub-sub-sub directory to folder ect. Same for my other PDF / MP3/ etc files as well.

Does anyone know if something like XCOPY or XMOVE is available is some form, or as some "ad-on" to Vista ????

Thanks

Joe Ashe

I believe xcopy is still available but limited. Vista has a new utility called robocopy. Here is one of a few sites pertaining to robocopy:
