Windows Media Player & Vista
Is there any way to uninstall/reinstall WMP from a Vista machine? From what I can gather, it is integrated into the OS and I would need to wipe/reload the entire OS to reinstall WMP.

Or better yet, does anyone know why WMP would effectively 'mute' mp3-format files? WMP will properly play any other file type, but mp3's are a no go (the player will look like it's playing the file, i.e. the timer will run and the slider bar will move across the bottom). And yes, I've tried all the standard troubleshooting techniques (verify the speakers are connected/not muted, uninstall/reinstall the hardware and drivers through Device Manager, etc etc) as well as scanning for malware/viruses and cleaned the registry, but to no avail.

Thanks in advance for any help!

2 things.
There is a multimedia forum which might get you a response.
http://forums.techguy.org/72-multimedia/

And there is a security forum for the HJT log - which also might
get you going.

Have you installed any "codec packs" at all? Or any other multimedia software that might come with codecs, (ie. Nero, or any DVD software)?

EDIT: After looking at your log, it looks like you have Nero 8 and iPod software installed. Did MP3's play before you installed any of these? What about iTunes or the Nero multimedia app? Do they play MP3's?

This is an issue on a friend's machine (which I'm not currently at). However, I am pretty sure (90%-ish) the Nero and iPod software do not have any problems playing mp3s (as a workaround for my friends, I grabbed Winamp for them to use, which plays the mp3s without a hitch).

As to your codec question, there are some on there. However (if I remember correctly), they have been loaded on the machine for at least a few months, so I don't believe they could be the reason (the issue I originally posted only popped up within the past week),

I would first suggest to uninstall all codec packs. I know you say it doesn't seem like it should be it, but usually codec packs are needed for DVD's or quicktime or avi videos. With iTunes and Nero installed you should be good on those, so remove other codec packs, then try it out.

Update
Sorry it took so long to get back to this issue, but I have uninstalled any/all codec packs I could find in the Programs and Features list with no avail. WMP still will not play mp3s correctly.
