I have similar problem with a Seagate on my XP machine. Just remember to turn it off before shutting down.
On mine, I can do a "Restart" with NO problem, but a shut down it hangs the system.

Hi folks,

Try re-flashing your system BIOS with either the latest version available, or even with the same BIOS revision. I've come to find that re-flashing the system BIOS seems to fix a myriad of boot issues. Before doing so, go into your existing BIOS system setup menu, and reset them to factory defaults (If you have a Dell system, it's F2 to enter Setup, then ALT+F to reset defaults. You'll hear the internal speaker beep at you; telling tou that it's been successfully reset. Then hit the ESC key once; tab over to Save Settings and Exit, and then press ENTER). Hope this helps!
