Vista Upgrade Advisor says yes, but computer technician says no.
Hi all. I ran the Vista Upgrade Advisor and it said that all my computer needs to run Vista is its Ram upgraded from 512 to 1gb and hard drive space of 15gb.

BUT. I took my computer into my local computer store and the technician said even if I did what the Upgrade Advisor told me, Vista would not function. He said it was something to do with my motherboard or processor.

I think it should work.

Here are the specs of my computer. If i upgrade RAM and increase disk space, will Vista Ultimate be able to run fairly well????

Thanks to anyone who can help. I will provide more specs if needed.

I would be reluctant
Your system will function better if you continue with XP. Vista may work, but usually two gigs of ram is better, and 1.83Ghz is slower than I would consider good Vista material.

You would be surprised how many dual cores and fancy new machines choke on vista.

Also if the tech believes your mobo is too slow for the job he is probably right.

I doubt it's an issue of "would vista work" it's more of an issue of "would vista work as it should". The answer is probably no.

A final point, I was at Best Buy the other day and saw an Intel 1.8 DUO with a 260 gig SATA HDD, a gig of ram running vista for only 360 bucks. If you have your heart set on vista maybe upgrading the whole system is better, if you can sell your machine in the paper for a couple hundred bucks, plus saving the money on vista itself, you walk away with a new system for almost nothing.

It's hard to say how well vista would run, but I really don't think you will be happy with it.

You haven't said what you are going to use the system for, but in general I'd say your CPU speed is fine. I have 2 Ghz with Vista Home Premium and it's working fine. I have 2 GB memory, but think that 1 would be OK for moderate use.

The biggest issue, other than the upgrades you've mentioned, is the graphics card. Many older ones are suitable for Vista Home Basic only because they do not support the eye candy of the other Vista versions.

Lest you think that I'm encouraging you to upgrade, I am not. Before I got a Vista system I thought that it would be best to buy a system meant for Vista. Now that I have some experience plus participating in this forum I'm convinced that I was/am correct. If you are having any issues with XP bump the memory to 1 GB and/or get a larger hard drive. Save Vista for your next PC.

I have used Vista Home Premium on an Athlon XP 1.7GHz with 1GB of RAM and that worked fine, although it seemed a wee bit sluggish. You definately, need 1GB or more ram. Your CPU should be ok to run Vista.

I've done it with a XP 1.6 and 1Gb.
The memory is more important than the CPU speed.

There is no question about it. 2GB is a must if you want to run Vista smoothly. I added an extra 1GB to my friend's laptop and Vista zooms now.

350 fps? Try that a decade later.

512 Mb is pretty barebones. You could squeeze it off, but there will be a huge performance impact. Other factors affect Vista's performance as well, such as hard drive speed, FSB, graphics card, and memory speed.

Why upgrade?

Even 1gig of ram with that cpu would be marginal at best. FWIW I had one system here running an amd64 3500+ with 1gig of ddr ram. It ran OK however it was not all that fast. Note the 3500+ and higher speed ram are far ahead of what you are attempting to use.

I have since swapped out the 3500+ and 1gig of ram for a board with a pentium D 940 with 2gig of ddr2 667 ram. It made quite an improvement.

I think it comes down to what do you want to do with the system? If you intend to just play solitaire, then you would probably be OK. If you intend to do video editing, burning dvds, hard core gaming, you will be disappointed.

The Vista Transformation Pack does not actually turn your computer into Vista. It makes your XP computer look like Vista, but nothing will be fooled into thinking it is actually Vista.

You can do the same thing with Windowblinds from Stardock.com.
