System slow
I have a cheapie Gateway eMachine with VISTA (about 9 mo old). Everything's slowed down-- internet access, loading, programs. I have deleted temp files, cookies, browsing history and repartitioned the hard drive. I have a lot of muisic files (legal). I have a minimum of installed software and zero games installed. No viruses found. Any quick fix to get speed up again? Thanks Cliff

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES.

You should see BASIC INFO ABOUT YOUR COMPUTER

Windows Edition

does it say Service Pack 1 anywhere?

Under System

Processor type

Memory (RAM) WHAT DOES IT SAY HERE?

I would recommend that you install Service Pack 1 at this point since you don't have it on your machine.

Go to CONTROL PANEL, select WINDOWS UPDATES and check for new updates.

Your PC might not be set to download and install the updates automatially.

In WINDOWS UPDATES you have the option to setup the WINDOWS UPDATES to automatically be downloaded and installed.

The updates sped things up a bit, but not much.

Does it say that you got Service Pack 1 installed now?

Did you scan your PC for viruses and other stuff?

What programs do you use for spyware removal?

Is this a laptop or a desktop?

Did Vista come with that machine or did you upgrade from XP?

I would recommend that you consider getting another stick of memory (RAM) so that you have 2GB. This will definitely increase the speed of your machine if the system is clean from viruses and spyware.

"Everything's slowed down" - Does this mean that it used to run fine when you got it but has recently slowed down?

The amount of memory is a bit low for good performance with Vista. You might at least try turning off aero.

Got any money for hardware? Shell out 50 bucks and get at least 1.5 gb ram. Also update all drivers, turn off unneeded visual effects..aero..get SP1..defrag the drive..use Readyboost..check if you have VRAM..

or best of all:

uninstall vista.

Aero is a desktop theme that can be used. There is only a minimal functional advantage given the amount of recourses is uses.

To not use Aero, simply use a different theme.

To turn off AERO: right click>customize>turn off transparency.

Also do this: run>msconfig> screen the items under startup and services

Also go here using Internet Explorer : <http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5>

Also visit <http://www.download.com/Auslogics-Disk-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10567503.html?part=dl-Auslogics&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=10857004> and download and install the defrager. Auslogics Disk Defrag is a great, free utility that I use often to speed up my PC.

Best of all:

Uninstall Vista :P
