Solved: Vista Security Center
Hello Everyone.

I am Brutium and I am new here.

I surely hope someone will be able to help me. I am currently running Vista Business edition (32 Bit). Recently I noticed on the taskbar a red shield with a white X in it. Scrolling over this it says "Windows Security Alerts". I tried to open it and change the "Automatic updating", since it has (by magic, Microsoft magic that is...) turned from on to off. I went through all the necessary steps, but untimately I get a message that says, "Security Center can't change your automatic updating settings". I tried to find a solution on the internet, but without success. I am now turning to you and I hope you will be able to help me. PS. I cannot run, nor install any Windows Updates. I have scanned my system for viruses as well as spyware. The system seems to be clean. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Review this blog; there is a Vista Security Center repair listed.

Hope that helps.

Also be sure to run some virus and spyware scans just to be sure.

Have you mad sure it is open in the Service?
Type Services.msc in the RUN bar. scroll down to "Windows Update". It should be on "Automatci (Delayed start). If it is not, You can change it by double clicking and choosing from the centre panel.
The other means of access is through the Control Panel (Classic view) . Click "Windows update" and over on the left (blue) panel, "Chnage settings"

Sorry to ask but have you activated Vista correctly? Maybe another reader can help, but what you describe only normally happens in a "time expired" Vista

Yes, Vista has been installed on my computer for a number of months without any problem. Suddenly without any warning the problem appeared. I am really stuck... I do not know what happened. Searching the web I found other users having the same issue. Is this problem another of the many problems that Vista has? I am beginning to think that I should not have switched to Visa. Going back to XP now seems an impossibility otherwise I would have....

Thank you for your help

Have you tried System Restore? If no luck it may be time to run a repair install.

Have you got it fix yet?
I have the exact same problem with my Dell 1330 laptop, running Vista Ultimate. After 6 months with no problem. I did virus scan, spyware scan with no luck. Disk check nothing came up but when I try to do system restore, it said disk is corrupted need to be repair before restore

I'm pretty much out of luck here, anyone have any suggestion? Reinstall?

Hoorrayyyyyyyy

I got it fgixed!!!!!

I went to Microsoft and did a search for the error. They suggested this link. I tried and it worked.

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3438479&SiteID=17

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories. Right Click the 'Command Prompt' item and click the 'Run As Administrator' option.

In the Command Prompt window, Paste the following command.

REGSVR32 %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

Press ENTER.

You should see a popup that says the command succeeded.

Exit the command prompt and try Windows Update again.

I hope this will help someone else!

Brutium
