Unhappy Solved: Explorer troubles and a false virus?
Alright, I've only been having this little problem today, 7/5/08, and it doesn't really go away.

Just recently, I've done some Norton updates for my Vista Home Basic box and ran a full scan of the C drive and found no viruses. However, whenever I look at my files in Windows explorer, I get this message frequently as seen in the first picture. It says this: "Attention, Aaron! Some dangerous viruses detected in your system. Windows Vista (TM) Home Basic files corrupted. This may lead to the destruction of important files in C:\Windows. Download protection software now! Click OK to download the antispyware. (Recommended)."

I think it is suspicious though, because I was using the guest account and not the account I used that first had this problem, named Aaron. If this thing was an authentic warning, it might have replaced Aaron with Guest. Plus, the overall feel of it feels fishy to me. But it may just be me and this could be something important.

Anyways, if I click no, then it opens up a firefox window saying it cannot locate free-viruscan.com, like an annoying pop-up. If I click yes, then I start downloading ieav.exe. Again, suspicous because I assume that this is for Internet explorer, and I never use Internet Explorer (I'm a firefox and Opera kind of guy). If I ever attempt to install it, it just doesn't work, absolutely nothing.

Now, the part that really ticks me off. I sometimes go into my Public Pictures files for wallpapers for my desktop. However, in the second picture attachment, It says that Windows Explorer stops working and it resets itself. And it's not limited to just Public Pictures either! When I click on almost any folder, the Warning pop-up comes up, wasting more of my time. And eventually, after doing some file operations, I get the Windows Explorer error again!

Any helpful input would be helpful for this (somewhat) minor problem. I just hope I'll be able to make this thing go back to normal.

I didn't have a spyware removal software with my Norton antivirus, so I downloaded the free Spybot as soon as I could, which was 7/7/08. I've just done the spyware scan and found 32 problems and fixed them up. I also went to immunize myself as well. The results about the weird pop-up...

It didn't stop it from popping up!

Thankfully, I figured a way around it by navigating on the left side of explorer, right click and open the folder I want in a new window, so I won't see the troublesome pop-up. However, it would be very nice to be able to not see this when I do windows explorer normally, since my new method of opening up a bunch of new windows is bound to take up some RAM.

At least I found a way to cope with it.

Well, I don't think I've turned off System Restore, because I've just tried to restore my system to the day before it all happened, 7/4/08, but the pop-up still occurs. Also, I have the windows firewall and Norton's firewall on. I dunno if that's good to have 2 firewalls on because they say it can make conflict or something. Plus, I don't use an instant messenger, but I get your example, Arseman03

Anyways, I think I could just live with it and tell others to do the right click thing too.

Smile I've been all fixed up!
Hey guys, it turned out to be that malware was in my system. I made a new thread and used HIjackThis and an anti-malware program to fix it. And I think was right about that pop-up being a false deal, because the scan showed that ieav.exe was part of the problem. Anyways, if you want to see those results, they're in this link:

In short, problem solved for now.
