Drive D is full
Evidently, I filled up my drive D trying to back it up a few months ago. I haven't had any luck backing up on disc either. I don't know how to empty the drive. This is one area where I'm really lost.

What media or type of drive are you trying to back up to?

ok first thing first,
can you detail some of the machine specs?
more specifically the drive sizes(free space etc.) and optical drives attached? (cd-rw make model, dvdrw make model)

also what kind of software you are using to try and backup.

Sounds like maybe you made copies of the file you were trying to backup perhaps on the same drive. Are you using a burning program because basically you can left click and light up a bunch of files in Windows Explorer and then right click them while lit, choose "send to" the cd-rw drive and then open My Computer and you will see what you want to burn there and just choose "write these files to cd" and off you go. Bear in mind a cd holds about 650 meg of data.

If your D Drive is a Recovery Partition .. It will be almost full ...
Don't worry about it .. And don't mess with it.

Do you have the emachines recovery CD/DVDs .. or have you made yours yet ??

Okay, when I try to back it up to disc, it formats the disc, then says "Backup did not complete successfully.
A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason: Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data. (0x8004231F)".

As far as the software I'm using, I guess it's Windows Backup and Restore Center.
The whole "process" is really getting on my nerves and I think I should have put Beginner on my profile. I think I'm just going to disable the DRive D is full message. If I can. I reckon I need an external hard drive?

I appreciate you guys' time.

Noyb, I have the Operating System Disc and an Anytime Upgrade disc. As far as Recovery CD/ DVD's, I don't think so. I haven't made mine yet, that's for certain...

How many gigs is you D partition ?? .. used and free space.
A recovery partition is about 6 > 8 gigs for a XP system ... and is normally full.

The recovery partition is used to make your Recovery CD/DVDs ..
or recover you computer back to the way is was built...
or restore an OEM supplied application...
It's not used for anything else.

Just want to make sure you're not talking about a recovery partition ... normally labeled a D partition.

8.4 max, 8.4 being used.
I'm on Vista. I know it's off subject, but I posted another question elsewhere concerning upgrading from Basci to Premium.

I guess the thing with the D drive is the constant "warning". And the fact that I don't know enough about it to not worry about it.

8 gig is about right for a Vista recovery partition.
I don't think your warning relates to the recovery D partition.

Here's my Vista HD .. The rightmost partition is the factory recovery partition.
It's not used in any computer or backup operations.

I have an Acer Business system with 2 40 gig drives. I use drive 'D' for backup and will occasionally get that message.

The resolution I use is to do a disk cleanup on the "C" drive -- and in the Advanced Options of disk cleanup include the System Restore archive. This deletes all but the current restore point and allows a backup to the 40 gig "D" drive from the 40 gig "C" drive.

But it's not clear to me that that is what you are trying to do. The message should only apply to the drive on which you are creating the backup. You cannot backup to the factory image drive.

Disk Cleanup is available in All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
