Solved: windows vista installer reboot error
I have windows Vista home basic. It was installed on my computer when I bought it. I have been installing software with no problems until yesterday. When I go to install Nero 8 soft ware , I receive an error message telling me that "the system needs to reboot, possibly a previous windows update ". No amount of rebooting will let me insatll any program.

I am running Avasti anti virus and it has not picked up any viruses.

Not enough information there to make even an educated guess as to what happened-- but if you are entirely in the dark just do a System Restore to a few days prior to the problem.

Then try your Nero install.

Any partially installed updates will come down the pike again.

If you continue to get this error we can try to examine installer logs and see if there is any info there.

Thanks for that info, I have tried a system restore back for each of the last 5 days and still can not install my Nero 8. I have tried unplugging the computer from the mains. I have tried running windows update mannually so I can get the system to reboot and clear any messages. I tried removing the windows updates that were installed the day before the error message and still no luck.

Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

edit (try this first if it applies) -- if there were any previous versions of Nero installed, use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility to remove any remnants and retest the issue. Do not use it to remove anything that can still be removed through Programs and Features or anything that you do NOT want removed >>

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301

------------------------------

Open up the User temp directory (you can run %temp% to do this) -- and look for any recent logs created with the form:

msi*.log

Upload one of those here as an attachment.

Note: if you don't see any installer logs you may have to enable the feature manually. These instructions apply to all Windows versions; if you need help with the registry edit, let me know:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=223300
http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/1127/

Also, run eventvw.msc and open the " Windows Logs > Application log"

In the right pane under "Actions" select "Filter Current Log"
Under "Event Sources" select "msiinstaller"
Click outside the drop menu to close that and then click "OK"

See what "msiInstaller" errors you are getting and select one or two of the recent ones click the "copy" (details as text) and paste that here.

Back in the other logs (Windows > System) see if there are any repeating errors associated with the attempted install.

Also verify that the source of Nero is either a download from their site or an install CD that is specfically said to be Vista Compatible.

Finally, if you have UAC enabled, disable it and reboot >>

Thanks , i did have nero 6 on my system but it had compatability errors so I uninstalled it.

I downloaded the microsoft installer as suggested, but there was nothing in there of Nero that I could see.

I added the registry info logging that you suggested.

There is nothing in the temp file with an msi*.log

I disabled the UAC. still no resolve to this issue

When I typed in the eventvw.msc I get this message " 'eventvw.msc' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

Have rebooted my system again and I still have the error and can not install Nero 8.

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated

My typo -- it's eventvwr.msc

and can you quote the exact message you are seeing if it is not found in the event logs?

When you run the Nero installer -- does the Windows installer launch?

Is this problem only occuring with the Nero installation or are there others as well that are producing it?

Also if you open the Windows update control panel applet -- what updates remain to be installed if any -- and can they be installed without a problem?

In the Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced properties > reliability monitor -- what is the last system change or update that preceeded this problem?

Hi I was able to install the program for my digital camera Olympus Camedia 4.1 with no problems, though it did not start up automatically when i put the CD in the drive.

I am trying to load Nero from a CD and it is vista compatable. I loaded it on to my daugthers Labtop that has the same Vista Home basics with no problems and it works fine.

the event log did not show any failures that I could see, there were no installs for Friday or since on where i have beening trying to load Nero 8 and failed.

I do not know when the error ocurred as I only tried to load Nero 8 for the first time on Friday 18/7/2008.

I did down load GIMP from the internet on 28/6/2008 and it works fine.

The error message when trying to load nero 8 is " A system reboot was requested by a previous software installation (e.g. a windows update). Please reboot your computer to resume installation of Nero 8"

performance Monitor - Shows all sorts of Failures from the 16/6/2008 to 19/7/2008.

one Failure of the Application errors is "mscods.exe 11/7/2008

one failure of the software errors is "USB\VID_04A9&PID_310A&MI_01\6&1B09480F&0&0001 28/6/2008 there are a number of these similar failures on this day.

There are no updates waiting to be installed everything has been done successfully.

Still needing your help

Google the error message and you will see that this apparently is a known Nero 8 problem.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&c...on&btnG=Search

Contact Nero support and I think they will send you something >>

The problem appears to be addressed in later versions beginning with this >> Nero 8.1.1.4

Quote:
Nero Webinstaller
Changes/Bugfixes
Installation was interrupted with the error message:
"The wizard was interrupted before Nero 8 could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete the installation at another time, please run the setup again."
Installation was interrupted with the error message: "A system reboot was requested by a previous software installation (e.g. a Windows update). Please reboot your computer to resume the installation of Nero 8 Demo."
Uninstalling did not work correctly under certain configurations and was interrupted with the error message: "Error accessing the OLE registry".
Installation was interrupted with the error message:
"Nero 7 is still installed; remove Nero 7 before installing
Nero 8".
