Hi. . .

Thank you for the mini kernel dumps and the msinfo32 NFO file.

I ran all 11 mini kernel dumps. Various bugchecks, but the primary probable cause of most was gt72ubus.sys

Most bugchecks were 0x000000d1 - the infamous DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL which indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory when it should not have ( IRQL that was too high).

It is my opinion that your BSODs are more than likely being caused by the fact that your Vista system is NOT updated with Vista SP1. The installation of SP1 must take priority - as further attempts to figure out this situation is futile.

Any particular reason that you have not updated w/ SP1?

I have included a summary of the bugchecks below; dbug logs attached.

Regards. . .

You have very old Symantec (Norton) program modules installed - get rid of them!

(128,616 bytes27/03/2007 14:16 Symantec Corporation c:program filescommon filessymantec sharedccvrtrst.dll
Symantec/ Norton may be the very reason that Windows Updates have not come in. Use the Norton Removal Tool to rid your system of this -

[b]Download the Norton Removal Tool HERE, save it to your desktop. Go to desktop, RIGHT-click on the NRT and let it run. Upon completion, re-boot.

Now reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply (if hi-lighted) | Click OK

Please let me know how you make out.

thanks JGriff --- i thought you'd never turn up

the startup programs ? i have no idea what those are

Firefox , i just updated a few hours before reading this.

I tried to download the NRT but i dont know what symantec product is on my pc , so i dont know which of the options to click.

I havent downloaded SP1 , cos updates usually mess something up in my experience , and until these crashes happened , i didnt consider it " broke " , so saw no need to " fix it.

setting the firewall to default will give me the headaches i had when i first got vista , when it was a control freak and wouldnt let me download even a simple jpeg or zip file cos it was overly security sensitive no ?

Hi. . .

First re: Norton - click on the link below, download it and SAVE it to your desktop. Go to desktop, close all windows, RIGHT-click on the Norton Removal Tool and select Run as Administrator. Upon completion, re-boot.

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

I do suggest that you reset the Windows Firewall to default settings b/c Norton usually leaves it in a shambles. It will set it so that you are prompted to allow what you want through - you will only have to answer it one time for each product. I think your initial problems w/ firewall was Norton and not Windows.

Click on the link below for MS SysInternals AutoRuns and download/save to your DESKTOP. Go to desktop, right-click on AutoRuns, select run as admin. The AutoRuns scanner will appear. Let it scan for a minute or 2 (status bottom-left), then save it as an ARN file - you will see the ARN file extension default when you go to save it.

http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

Run msinfo32 and save as an NFO file -
START | type msinfo32 - hit enter. Save it as NFO file - you will see the NFO file extension default when you go to save it.

Zip these 2 up and attach to your next post - they will hopefully help me find those foreign programs and provide instructions for removal.

After that is done, run the System File Checker - SFC -
START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe above under Programs - select Run as Administrator | the black cmd prompt/DOS screen will appear - type the following:

sfc /scannow

Let it run - after completion, re-boot to allow "pending renames" to work. A re-boot will dis-mount the hard drive and allow SFC to finish.

Then please go into Windows Updates and see how many are there waiting to install - you can click on this link is you wish - nothing will be downloaded, it just tells you what is available for download

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Any ? - Please let me know.

JC

Hi. . .

I am sorry, but I am unable to download the attachment - yours and one from another thread. I have tried Vista, XP and even another physical location about 5 miles from here. No luck. Please see my PM for my email.

@ dvk01 - Thanks - I am able to download w/o any problems now.

@ 2ndMOUSE - I received the email - and have some results for you.

I am glad to hear about the 29 Windows Updates that came in. Did you run AutoRuns and msinfo32 before or after the Windows Updates came in? If before, please re-run both and attach new zip file.

msinfo32 shows SP1 NOT installed. It also tells me that problems have existed in your system for a while now, although not completely apparant to you. The WERCON (Windows Problem Reports & Solutions) section tells me that you had > 200 app crashes between December 24, 2007, and April 10, 2008. Every single on has a 0xc0000005 exception - an access violation. I usually see this caused by the Internet Security Suites.

Let's go to AutoRuns. Right-click on the autoruns.exe file and select run as admin. When scanning is finished, click on the Logon tab up top. In the last section toward the bottom of the screen you should see an entry w/ the ???? marks as shown in the screen shot - un-check it. Exit AutoRuns. Re-boot.

Two more items, please:

- A Vista health report - START | type perfmon /report & hit enter - 60 seconds, report will be displayed in IE7 or FFox web browser. Save as an MHT file if IE7 - via Page, Save As, save in MHT format. Firefox - click on File, save, save as web page.

- A dxdiag report (text file) - START | type dxdiag - enter. DirectX Kernel viewer will appear - bottom of screen - save as a text file

Zip these up and attach.

Just to let you know, I have to go to Philadelphia today, so i don't expect to be around until late afternoon or evening.

hi JC

I switched the ???? off in the logon section of autoruns.

but....

2 things.....the perfmon/report didnt open results in either IE or FFOX , and when i clicked on save as...within the independant window it ran the test on , the only save option was html. I've rar'ed that and attached it here.

2nd thing.....i typed dxdiag in the start menu and hit henter , but when it appeared , there was no mention of kernel drivers anywhere

????
