Vista left out the M$ Sound Mapper than might be able to work around this connectivity problem ... along with some other good tools.

The rest of the problems are in the newer integrated sound Chips/Drivers.
My newest computer can run either the OEM Vista HP ... or XP MCE.
The major problem is not in the OS.

All I know is that my Vista Home Premium cannot record streaming audio. Is there any way of getting Microsoft Sound Mapper on Vista?

Nice call, Noyb. Now check this out. I went to Options--> Properties and opened the window you showed. I clicked on the recording button. Guess what?

I do not have the Stereo Mix option!!!

I have Line In, Mic In and Cd.

I can't believe it. What version of Windows are you running? I thought you were on XP as well??

I also figured this is MSFT changing the OS so as to make it very hard for us to record streaming audio. I just saw yoru last post though. I definitely cannot choose the Sound Mapper in Audacity - just HD Capture and HD Render.

Update

Noyb, when I go to Options-->Properties and I see the Mixer Device drop down menu, I notice that you have chosen Line In/Mic In.

I have no such option. The only options I have there are HD Render and HD Capture. I have to choose HD Capture in order to light the Recording radio button.

Is there some way I can configure my system so that I can see Line In/Mic In in that drop down menu??

No matter how this goes, thanks so much as always for donating your valuable time here.

As much as I hate Vista ... I booted the new computer to Vista .. and installed Audacity.
Used my Splitter ... and tied the line out .. to line in.
Right clicked the Taskbar Speaker Icon .. chose the recording devices and set the Line In as default.

Then went to Audacity .. Edit > Preferences and set the recording source to Line in and stereo.

I'm recording this Guenter Wendt interview right now ..

Is this what you'd call streaming audio ??

Seems like I have to have all the volumes just about maxed out for a recording.

Are you sure there's no Stereo Mix ???
Right click in the window and choose to Show Disabled devices.
But I don't think Audacity can see the Stereo Mix as a recording source with the newer sound chips.

Ah well, since I'm running XP here I may be out of luck.

Noyb, I wish I could have responded a few minutes after you posted, sorry.

I wish I didn't have to ask dumb questions like this but I don't know how to get that dialog box marked 'Sounds' that you showed in the thumbnail. How do you get to that window? Please recall I am using XP, not Vista. I tried to get there via the last window you linked me to, the one I get to via Control Panel-->Sounds and Audio Device Properties-->Volume Tab--Advanced-->Options-->Properties

but I could not find it. Can you give me an explicit instruction as to how to get that 'Sounds' dialog box up so that I can right click in that window and see if I can choose 'Show Disabled Devices'? No matter where I go, I cannot right click in any window and get an option to 'Show Disabled Devices'.

Thanks as always

@mset my reply was specific to Vista, XP did not have this problem when I used Total Recorder to capture streaming video, the TR software installed its own driver to manage this issue in XP.

@Galleherjazz, Did you try my suggestion, I can record streaming audio on my Vista PC.

Galleherjazz is using Vista .. and I was able to get Vista to record from the line in ... using the splitter ... Sound mapper not needed with the wire-around.
Only in Vista would they think to hide the control to un-hide something that was hidden .... Like stereo mix.

In XP .. The newer sound chips don't seem to work with Stereo Mix .. so the M$ sound mapper in XP is one thing to try before wiring-around and using line In.

The ability for Audacity to connect to the source from the Audacity tool bar ... ended for me ... three computer generations ago.

Mumbodog, Noyb is correct: I am using VISTA, so your suggestion won't work. There is simply no stereo mix option in the Recording panel of the Sound panel.

My question remains: without using the splitter and tying the line out to line in, is it FINAL that there is no tweek, download, or registry fix/workaround to enable the recording of stereo mix in Vista?

In My Vista ... Stereo mix is available ... See post 21.
I just run another test ... and set stereo mix as the default ...
then told audacity to use stereo mix as the input ...
and it worked without the splitter.

Well, I am flummoxed! In speaking with the technicians at SoundBlaster, they say that my Creative SB Xi-Fi has the capability but that it is VISTA that blocks that option! Somebody doesn't know what he/she is talking about! My SB drivers are up to date. Should I consider another sound card?

Can you unhide the stereo mix as shown in post #21 ??? ... Then enable it ...
then see if Audacity can record as shown above ??

Arrow No Stereo Mix Option, Hidden or Unhidden
There is no access whatever to Stereo Mix.
