Unhappy Black screen after logon in Vista
Hi All!

I have recently been experiencing a problem with my installation of Vista Home Premium. I rebooted my laptop and now when I try to log on, I enter my password and I see the "Welcome" screen with the spinning blue circle, then the screen fades out to a black screen with just the mouse cursor. I have left it in this state for at least half an hour and nothing else happens. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing, and neither does Ctrl+Shift+Esc. The same problem happens for both users that I have set up on the laptop.
I've also tried booting into Safe Mode and this doesn't help either - the same problem occurs. I run Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 so I am fairly confident that it is not a virus that has caused it.

I would really appreciate any help that anyone can offer on this problem, thanks very much in advance!

Worst case scenario, see this article, sounds like you issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=946532

1. If you restart the computer, press F8 before the Windows Vista progress indicator appears, and then click the Safe Mode option, the same problem occurs.

2. If you start Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to restore the Windows Vista-based computer, WinRE stops responding.

3. If you try to use Windows Vista installation media to repair the system, the system stops responding."

I reinstalled Vista and it fixed the problem - for a while. I now have the same problem again, with my main user stopping at a black screen, exactly as before. However I had made another user on my laptop that I had not yet logged on to, and I was able to log in to that, albeit very slowly. I am using it now and it functions OK, but any disk access is very slow. Do you think that the hard drive may be permanently damaged and that is why the problem has come back again?

Thanks all for your help!

Yes it could be a sign of a failing hard drive,

Damn. Looks like an online shopping trip for me... I've been wanting to get a bigger hard drive anyway and this gives me a good excuse
Cheers for the help
